2/5/04

Remember last week how we told you to expect Lucasfilm's announcement of the release of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD sometime between now and May? Well... you MIGHT not have to wait as long as May after all.

Both The Force.net and Rebel Scum have today posted a rumor that Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox will be making their official Star Wars DVD announcement next week, likely on Tuesday. Their information again confirms that the films will be released in a 4-disc set, like the Indiana Jones DVDs, and that the street date is set for 9/21/04.

The interesting thing is, we'd actually heard this same information from some of our industry sources a few weeks ago - folks who have been extremely reliable over the years. But we know this subject is a real hot button with DVD fans, so in the interest of not getting everyone worked into a frenzy, we've been sitting on it until we could confirm it better. So is it the real deal? Well... keep in mind that announcements like this are never set in stone until they're set in stone, so to speak. I would still absolutely regard this as tentative. Lucasfilm could announce Monday instead of Tuesday, or they could wait until the following week, or the end of the month. That said, it's definitely our belief here at The Bits, based on the best information we have, that an official announcement of some kind is very close.

So let's wait and see what next week brings, shall we? Just maybe good things. Stay tuned...

Only time will tell, but it appears it will be a short time until we find out....hopefully.

Peace Out~:D

This set will no doubt smash all previous sales records by a wide margin.

It's on my must have list!

You know it. Lord of the Rings watch out. When this hits the streets it'll be the hottest DVD set....ever. Can't wait myself. The additional scenes at the end of ANH when the X and Y wings were flying towards the DS were awesome.

My favorite shot that was added to ANH was the quick overhead shot of the Millenium Falcon taking off from Mos Eisley. It was only a quick few seconds, but I thought it really wicked cool to see that overhead shot of it lifting off.

Close second were the shots you mentioned of the X & Y wings storming toward the DS.

The Han/Greedo "who shoots first" thing was a HUGE mistake! Read a rumor that it may be changed back to the original way. Just an internet rumor though. We'll see.

It's the big DVD announcement you've all been waiting for: Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox have announced the DVD Release for Star Wars Trilogy DVD on September 21st. This special 4 disc box set will include the three 'original' Star Wars movies (Star Wars IV: A New Hope, Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi) presented in THX Anamorphic Widescreen and Dolby Digital-EX. Each film will be released in the 'Special Edition' version (including the changes made to the films for their theatrical re-release in 1997) and feature audio commentary by George Lucas and select members of the cast and crew. In addition to the three features the box set will also feature a fourth disc including making-of documentaries and features for the 3 films as well as a 2 hour documentary including never-before-seen footage. There will NOT be an option to view the films in their original theatrical version and the films will not be sold individually. Exact pricing for the set, specific disc extras and an official pre-order date to be announced in the weeks ahead.

Ok, don't flame me for my opinion, because it's JUST an opinion. ;)

I hate the whole Star Wars series. I've always thought of these movies as real life cartoons. I just could never get into C3PO, R2D2, and other "characters" saying stupid things and making stupid sounds. I know there is a lot more to these films than just that but that's just enough to turn me off of them completely. Just needed to be more serious for ME to enjoy the ones I did see.

I still cannot figure out why people are so upset over added footage.

I saw A New Hope in 1977 13 times at the Big Newport theater in Fashion Island, Newport Beach, CA. That theater still looks the same as it did then. Everytime I go there, I think back to those days. The impact that movie had on me at 11 years old still has that same impact today, SE or not.

Not that upset (as in I will buy the DVD set), but I never felt the changes added a thing and in some cases were a detraction.

Just because the technology advanced to where added CG "space animals" could be added to a scene, doesn't mean they needed to be.

Lucky me, this is released near my birthday. I am in the camp of the specialness of the special additions didn't add much, nor did they detract much either. I am curious to see what the experience will be like in HT rather than crappy local theater. Regardless this will be a quick pickup as soon as it is released.

I can't wait to hear the first ship from Star Wars come into my living room. When I first saw Star Wars, at age 12 at the Coronet in San Francisco, I jumped up and screamed Earthquake when that ship came across the screen. I have been a fan ever since. Some time back in the late 80's they had a screening of the original triolgy at the Coronet. It was great and an all day affair. I wonder if they will ever do all six at one time? That would be something.
