Is my avr powerful enough

Hello all, this is my first post but I've been lurking for some time on these forums. My question is. This is my first home theater/ any audio setup I've ever done. I am going for an all Polk 7.1 setup. Right now I have polk monitor 50 for my L/R, a polk CS2 for my center. Polk monitor 30 for my side surround and polk rm6750's for my rear surrounds. Plus a BIC acoustictech pl-200 for my sub. I am running it all off a sony str dh 740 avr. I haven't set it all up yet because I am waiting for my basement to be finished. I have recently found a set of polk monitor 70 on Craigslist for 120$ a piece and I am thinking on buy ing them to use as my fronts and move all the other speakers back in the rig. Will the 70's work well with my avr or do you think I should pass in the 70's. I don't have enough cash to upgrade my avr at this time. I will be using the system for 90% movies/games and 10% music. Thanks in advance guys

It will work just fine, but it will also sound better when you can drive your speakers to their full potential with an amp. So go ahead and got the 70s, just be careful with the volume.

Welcome to CP! You're putting together a pretty nice system but your current AVR is really gonna struggle to drive it, especially 7.1. At a little over 18#, it just won't have the juice. Personally I'd pass on the 70's as they really need some power. I'd stick with 5.1 until you have the funds to upgrade the AVR. The more channels you try to run, the less each will get. Good luck!

Thanks guys for the quick response. Can any of you suggest an avr that will work great with my 70's setup? I'm not looking for all the wireless bells and whistles or for 2 zone capability. Just a powerful ave with 7.1 and 3-d passthru. Thanks

What is your budget?

Pioneer SC series IMO. If you're lucky enough, check out your local Costco and see if they have any SC1222k's still in stock. For $399 you can't beat it...

If you are 90% movies, i would forget about the 70s. Your avr will have plenty of juice for your current system. Set your xover to 80hz on your avr and your speakers to small. The sub is going to most of the heavy lifting, freeing up power for your speakers. Remember it is rare that all of your speakers get powered at the same time during movies. When they do, its only for fractions of seconds. The specs on your avr are decent and that sub you have is underrated IMO. Get it all set up, tweaked and play a few movies.

Thanks for the advice I really don't have much of a budget right now but I will start saving soon. I just plugged in the 50's and the sub and was shocked at the great sound coming out of my speakers compared to my HIB. I guess I am already getting upgrade-itis!!!!!

Don't worry about upgrade-itis .... I've changed speakers a lot in the 5 months I've been doing audio, and drives my wife nuts. I like trading up for very little money.
I'm new too, and had monitor 50s for fronts until a week or so ago. I too am almost 100% HT, ended up with RTi 8s and moved Monitor 50s to the rear. My AVR is the only thing I splurged on and bought new. It's awesome!! Was when the 50s were up front as well too.
If your like me and came from a HTIB, you'll be blown away. My SVS sub was easily the biggest bang for the buck though! Got it for $300, but had to drive 4 hrs each way to get it. (But I've had a decent receiver the whole time)Man cave:
