Do different releases of the same CD have significant differences in quality?

I recently picked up a used copy of Zeppelin II and it sounds very good to me. I did a little searching and looked it up on discog and it is a remastered release from the 90s. I assume at least in this case it is probably better than earlier release. Would it be better than latter releases as well? I also have a CD of dark side of the moon that I'm not impressed with. According to discog it is a Japanese release. Yesterday I picked up a remastered copy of SRV couldn't stand the weather with bonus tracks. Man this cd sounds good, and I've have only listened to it in the car!

I thinking it does matter. If so how do I figure out what releases are better?

Releases vary, not a matter of when they were released...it's all a hit or miss but look at different reviews from different places

Even an SACD release doesn't mean squat
