Old TV Set Old Connection Options but New Blue Ray, etc

If I have a new AVR and a Blue Ray player but an old Sony rear screen projector tv that works great but only has composite video or S-Video inputs (plus red and white audio input), Can I hook the blue ray player to the avr using component video connections but then s-video or composite connections from the avr to the tv? I read that you can't hook a blue ray to an avr with HDMI connections and then anything less than HDMI to the tv.

Everything depends on WHAT connections the BluRay Player has on its backside. Older players like my Pioneer below allow you to hook to your TV via composite, S-video, and RGB component as well as HDMI. And the sound can be output in analog RCA L/R, digital coax, or HDMI. There are menus in the Pioneer that allow you to select all of this.

If your BDP has those connections, you're good, as you can hook up as you wish. Remember that if you use composite or S-video your player will down convert to 480i. RGB connections will provide the highest possible resolution that your TV is capable of whether that be 480p or 1080i.

You would run your sound to the AVR through the COAX or TOSLINK digital connection. Some Players do allow sound to be output from the HDMI and the picture to be routed through other outputs. You need to read your owners manual and also just look at the back of the player. Newer players no longer have a number o the legacy connections on them.

Since you have NO HDMI connector, it is somewhat useless to connect the video to the AVR.

Thanks cnh. I think I'm dead in the water with the Blue Ray for now. Why won't this old Sony just die and then I wouldn't feel guilty about buying a new TV?

Why do you need to feel guilty about buying a new tv ?

Just picked up a Samsung led 120 hz hd set for the bedroom from HH GREGG for just 450. Though I probably wouldn't buy anything there again as their salemen are worse than BestBuy. I see smart TV's all over 50 inch for under 700.

Though one word of caution, if you don't have HD cable service, the HD TV's will look like crap on a standard signal. So you may have to up your game there or just get free over the air HD with a new antenna.

I like all the ideas. I'm sure I could get someone to take it away for free. I was in a store this weekend and I couldn't see why one TV would be $2600 and another $900. They did all look pretty similar in picture quality. Now the $5000 sets definitely looked better.

You are going to be hard pressed to see the differences in a Big Box store. The sets ship with their color/contrast settings optimized for absolutely horrid visual conditions under megawatt metal halide lights found in those stores.

Your best bet for viewing TVs is finding the mom and pop TV shops and checking them out there.

Plus a lot of them have the sets on torch mode, all the time, which reduces the life of the bulb.

I figured with the store playing 100 sets at one time there would be something lost. Thanks for the ideas.
