You might consider upgrading your center channel to the CSi5. Then again you might not.

    Two Channel Setup:

    Speakers: Wharfedale Opus 2-3
    Integrated Amp: Krell S-300i
    DAC: Arcam irDac
    Source: iMac
    Remote Control: iPad Mini

    3.2 Home Theater Setup:

    Fronts: Klipsch RP-160M
    Center: Klipsch RP-160M
    Subwoofer: SVS PB12NSD (X 2)
    AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2030
    Blu Ray: Sony BDP-S790
    TV Source: DirecTV Genie

Both are good amps IMO. I am currently using the 500 and are happy for the moment till i upgrade to something better. Im what ways were "some people" saying how it was better? Its easy just to say something and not really know what you a re talking about. If it bothers you that much then do some research

    BTW Welcome to the Forum

Those "people" don't know what the hell they are talking about. You've got a great setup. The Onkyo 701 is better than a comparably priced HK. The Onkyo has a better amp and is easier to use, and did I mention build quality?

    Enjoy your system without regret!

I bought the Onkyo 701 and ended up returning it for some short comings I thought it had. For one thing, bass in two channel music, even when set up by-the-book, was way waaaaaay off. And, it was lacking some really nice features I didn't even know existed, or think I wanted. All things considered, I thought the 701 was a good unit, I (and I stress I) was unsatisfied with it. I knew I could do better for that price range, and I think I did (by far).

    No 7.1
    No Component video OSD
    No Component video up-conversion
Very few DSP's to speak of
No DPLIIx (although now that I have it, I never use it ;))
No automatic setup (like Yamaha's YPAO or Pioneer's MCACC)

Get to know it. If you love it keep it! It may be just the right one for you.

Personally, I now own, treasure, and love my Yamaha RX-V2400!

Are you really going to use all of those features you supposedly don't have? Do you like the Onkyo? Do you like the sound? If you do then keep it...because no one elses opinion matters but yours. Who knows...you could go buy the Yamaha he recommends and think it sucks.

It's all a matter of taste, in particular YOUR taste. It either sounds good or it doesn't. It either has the features you need and want or it doesn't. It doesn't really matter what WE think as I'm sure you could find just as many proponents of Onkyo products as those who aren't, same for Denon, same for Yamaha, same for Pioneer (Elite), same for ... well you get the picture.

I find Polk's comment about Onkyo at the very least interesting given that they have no affil with Onkyo.

    vscindia,

Have you even hooked up your new system yet? Hook all the gear up & watch some DVD's in surround. Then listen to some CD's in stereo, or in DSP modes. JUST USE THE DAMN THING!

If, after you actually listen to it for a couple weeks, you don't like it or think you need more silly features, then return it.

If you are looking for a comparison of Onkyo vs. Harmon Kardon, go down to Circuit City and listen to both. I think you will find the sound quality to be very similar, we are just talking about recievers after all.

I think you have a sweet system, and would not recommend changing anything. Stop worrying about it, just enjoy it.

I have currently set up 5.1 system..Sound is goood that's what i think..I know it is a matter of taste. But since i am new in HT thought just verify what i got.
I bought Onkyo based on it's reputation and tested the same in CC .The only think i don't like that it has just one coax input.Other than that it is great.

Sounds like you got it at a good price. Just to play devil's advocate to Sowen's comparison:

    "No 7.1"
The data sent to the 6th channel (6.1) and to the 7th channel is identical.

    "No Component video OSD
    No Component video up-conversion"
You shouldn't use component switching unless you absolutely have to. This would mean buying an extra component cable, and introducing one more stop on the video signal's journey to your TV. And as for "upconversion", the result is only as good as the source.

"Very few DSP's to speak of"
DSP changes the dynamics of the source, very bad IMO. I would never use them, even if I could make it sound like I was listening to Beastie Boys in a church cathedral.

    "No automatic setup"
Just use an Avia, Video Essentials, Sound & Vision DVD, etc and a Radio Shack meter.

You shouldn't have remorse on your 701, especially at that good price.

    Regards,
    PolkThug

...like I said, "just playing devil's advocate".

Just thought that I'd chime in here.

Having been a huge HK user/advocate since 1988 I have recently made the switch to Onkyo. My feeling is that HK over the last several years has downgraded their line a bit in an effort to grab more of the mid-tier market share. I'm not saying that they don't make good equipment but I was very disappointed in the overall SQ of their more recent offerings as compared to some of their older equipment that I own.

Don't let someone talk you out of being happy with your equipment becuase they prefer something else. There is always something better out there that you can buy and you can second guess yourself till you a crazy. (Of course, that is part of what makes this hobby so fun and addictive ;) )

Sounds like you got a good deal. Enjoy!
A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

Like I said, get to know it. It may be just right for you. I tried to stress it was my opinion that I found the 701 lacking. It is hard to compare any receiver to the Yamaha RX-V2400, feature wise (except maybe the Denon 3803). The Yamaha is just jammed packed with features but you won't touch it for $500.00. Though you could get your hands on a RX-V1400 for close to that.

It could be that the unit I had simply had a problem. If you read through my thread, you would see the issues I was having with bass in 2-channel mode. Whenever I would play a CD, or the radio, the sub did nothing unless I cranked it beyond reason, and then when you throw a 5.1 movie at it, you'd be blown into the neighbors back yard (BOOOOOOOOOOM). I never exchanged the unit to see if the issue was limited to it or if it was "model wide". I can say the Yamaha does not have this problem at all.

-As far as 7.1 goes, there are no 7.1 movies. Yamaha's DSP's will produce 7.1 though.

-DSP's, well, most sources sound terrible with them. Although, some movies are better with them. "Spectacle", and "Adventure" are really good.

-I love Component up-conversion! It keeps me from having to switch inputs on the TV all the time. Everything is connected to the Yamerhammer and the Yamerhammer is connected to the monitor via component video cables.

-Automatic setup saves lots of time. The automatic parametric eq does a superb job!

If you care, Audioholic's has a great review of the 2400 here..... http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/YamahaRXV-2400Receiver-p1.html

You did get a really good price for the 701. I paid $719 for it so going up to the Yamaha wasn't much more money. Again, get to know it! You may just love it. In that case, no receiver would do you any better.
