ED A3-300 Plate Amplifier

I love my A3-300 Elemental Design subwoofer, but the auto-on features is hit-or-miss with the speaker level inputs. If I use the line level inputs it works perfectly, but it only works sometimes with the speaker level, and it's not based on volume or bass content. Does anyone have experience with anything similar?

I have similar if I use the lfe in my a2-300. I have to watch the level I set in my avr or it won't work unless I use a y splitter.

Let me do some looking and get back to you.

    Thanks!

I've heard that can be an issue with the LFE, but if I run the subwoofer at line-level, I always use the preout which works great.

I've been playing with the speaker wire, and still no auto-on. I tried running the signal to the subwoofer on the B set of binding posts and turning them off an on, and running both sets of speakers cables into the same banana plug to ensure low resistance. If I toggle the power switch the signal comes right on, and I tried the RCA connection last night and it turned the sub on instantly as well. Maybe there isn't enough juice in the speaker level connection for it to trigger like with the LFE signal?

Update: I decided to try cranking the volume when I first turned on music, and the sub kicked on! It looks like there wasn't enough juice to trigger the auto-on with regular listening volume, so I'll have to figure out how to fix that. Maybe the input resistance is too high on the speaker level inputs?

Thats pretty much what I am running into on occasion with the LFE input. I just run it a bit hot and that seems to cure the issue. If I wasnt so OCD about having a direct connection with the Audioquest sub cable I bought instead of using a splitter, I would just use that splitter and be happy... but I am OCD about cables mattering since this one makes a pretty big difference in my LFE quality lol...

I've been running the subwoofer off a preamp lately with stereo RCA inputs and it clicks on with even a low level signal present. I think I'll leave it that way... :)

I would start looking for an alternative soon, all of their amps are on borrowed time due to cheap capacitors. I had a couple die on me within a couple of years.

I heard that, but both the plate amps the subwoofer came with had the capacitors upgraded for years of reliable service. Thanks for the help!

There are a ton of stories on AVS about the problems with ED plate amps. Thank God there's a AVS member over there who repairs various plate amps. Sounds like ED sold a ton_ of subs til the company cratered.
