Like I need more speakers...
No grills, tweeters pushed in and scratches/knicks on cabinets but 10B they are.

Nice score; I wouldn't pass up a pair of 10's either. I wonder how they'll compare to the 400's you have there in the background?

Had to drive almost 70 miles round trip for these but price was too good to pass.

I don't think I'll prefer 10B's over A400's as A400's came on top against SDA-2B (standard and studio both), CRS+'s and peerless 10A's I had before. You can search those threads here but I will compare as a part of my routine anyways later on.

Just did a quick n dirty comparison against the JBL L166's though.
    Very different sound.
JBL's sound heavy, thick, metallic, lower and cleaner than 10B'.
That was the same experience when I compared L166's with A400's so A400's and 10B's may sound more similar.
Will update. Need to find some speaker cable and set all three to switch back and forth.

I've never heard A400s but the A200s certainly don't sound like what you're describing. And my A100s do NOT lack bass. If anything they're a little boomy down there, but they can rattle your wall?

My guess would be that A200s have a little more low end than 10Bs and cleaner mids, as well as imaging much better.

It's hard to believe that the A400s would sound much different from the A200s. Aren't the cabs about the same size, the difference being in one single 10" woofer than dual 8" (isn't that what the A400s have?).

Of course, slap a Marantz receiver on that 10B and you might be forced to revise your opinion. I've been very impressed by my 10As on the Marantz, crazy synergy there!

    Look forward to more!

Okay here is what I think. It's not a perfect setup but it is what I can do.
So take it with a grain of salt.
I hate my P&S camera. Horrible night time pictures.

    20140224-Polk-10B-JBL-A400-small-P1050577.jpg

10B's: Not bad at all as expected but compared to A400's, the vocals sound slightly constricted/stressed, brighter, forward, slightly hollow/thin but more force on the overall sound.

A400's: Much smoother, much heavier with a lot more tight bass. They just sound big/full and balanced compared to 10B's.
Vocals are free and open. They are softer but more detailed highs. When you switch from 10B's to A400's, you'll feel much easier to the ears. May be that 5dB peak at 13kHz on the 10B's.

Overall A400's win hands down, not even close. I don't mind selling 10B's as early as tomorrow if I have to.

Next will be a comparison of 10B's with 7's both with SL-2000 tweeters.
I'll trust a lot of online reviews and probably stick with 7's if I have to let one pair go.

Thanks for the comparison Mystery. I'm thinking I'm going to pass on a pair of 10's at my local flea now. I thought their price was a tad high anyways and they've been there for a few months now.

When I had my a400's my listening impressions closely mirrored yours. Mine bested both my rta 12's and my crs's. The 400's are very nice sounding speakers that were high on my list for many years and it took a pair of 2.3s to knock them off their perch as my main speakers.

I'll keep eyes open for the larger Polk speakers.
The largest I had were 3.1TL's and I liked 2B's better.

Playing with 10B's, their sound improves somewhat to my liking using equalizer.
Around 5 dB up at 63 Hz, 2500 Hz, 6300 Hz and around 5 dB down at 16000 Hz makes them much more listenable.
I wish I had a better equalizer with more frequency adjustments to tweak more.

I have to wonder how the 10's or 7's would compare to the A400's if you did a full treatment to them. (RD0 tweeters, crossover rebuild, dynamat, etc)

I'm not spending that much just to compare as I'm pretty sure A400's will still come out on top.
If someone local has a fully upgraded pair, we can do that.

But that's not a fair comparison. A400's are much bigger and were top of the line than Polk 7/10 models.
Better comparison would at least involve SDA-2 and similar size models.

I picked up a pair at a garage sale in Denton, TX back in 2006 for $3 a pair. Yes...three dollars. At same sale, also a Carver C-2 preamp, M-1.0t amp, and Aiwa EQ for $20. Sold the Aiwa and paid for it all plus some. Still have the M-1.0t (rebuilt to an Mk II) and recapped M10's do garage duty at my best friends house. Great speakers.

I replaced the Adcom GFA-555II with Rotel RB-990BX and monitor 10B's sounded better.
Less harsh/dry, smoother mids and more details. Overall, slightly sounded bigger with more details all around than with Adcom.

Looks like Rotel is better for Polks than Adcom. I'll have to do more listening tests with these two amps.

Nice score. I love my Monitor 10's. So they sounded better with a Rotel amp? I guess I need to add that to my CL search list! LOL!

Yes they did sound better with Rotel than Adcom.
They are gone to a local Polk enthusiast.

BTW, looks like attachments in threads from previous forum are all gone. :(

Yes, looks like all the referenced images' links changed.
