How to tell SDA 2.3 from SDA 2.3TL model?

ok..this may be a silly question...but here goes:

How does one tell the difference between the SDA 2.3 and SDA 2.3TL speakers?

I am looking at the set of 2.3s currently listed on ebay. The link to the ebay ad is below. I'd appreciate it if anyone here can let me know if these are 2.3TLs or not and what tweeter they have and if that is a decent price.

I texted the seller because the seller originally listed them as the 2.3TL model but recently changed the listing (they didn't sell so he lowered the price) and he now lists them as just the 2.3 (non-TL) model. I texted him and the seller said he bought them a month ago and originally thought they were the TL model but said they don't say TL on the tag on the speakers so he is now not sure if they are the TL model or not. I asked him which tweeters are in them and he did not know that either.

If they are the TL model, I think the price is fair, especially with all of the upgrades done to the speakers (seller bought them a month ago and mods done by original owner). But price may still be beyond my current budget (too much gear and too little money, as always, ha) although I am interested in them as they look to be in great condition and 2.3TLs (if they are TL model) don't show up around here much.

Thanks.

No doughnut drivers and SL3000 tweeters those are 2.3TL I'm also fairly sure that seller is a member here or bought them from a member here.

maybe musky something or another...good price for what you get.

Thanks, pitdogg. I thought they were 2.3TLs but wanted to make 100% sure. I believe the seller did buy them form a forum member because he said he got them about a month ago. He drove to PA to get them and said the original owner did all of the mods and also did did the tiger maple wooden caps on them. He said the original owner also had sold the wooden end caps he made on a Polk site so it sounds like the original owner was indeed a forum member and did a lot of nice mods to them (although current owner doesn't know what he has, haa). The current owner told me he prefers the sound of his Dahlquist DQ 10s to the SDA 2.3s and that is the reason he is selling them. I also have a pair of DQ 10s and thy have been collecting dust ever since I got my SDA 2BTLs. I much prefer the sound of SDAs over the DQ 10s although I know it is all a matter of taste.

I have always wanted to get a pair of 2.3Tls.
Now I just need to find the money to get them (does anyone want to buy a pair of DQ 10s? haaa).

    Thanks again, pitdogg.

I'd say he intended to do them but just didn't get around to it. Those boards are 100.00 IIRC. Sounds like there may also be Larry's rings.

Would there be a major upgrade in sound from my SDA 2BTLs to the 2.3TLs?

Of course, if I got the 2.3TLs, I'd like to keep both models but I am curious what the difference in sound would be between the 2BTLs and the 2.3TLs. I love my 2BTLs and, although I have never heard 2.3TLs, I have heard wonderful things about them on this forum and I know some even think the 2.3TLS my be the best of all the SDA models.

MAJOR difference. 2b's are no slouch but in an order of magnitude they're bookies compared to 2.3's

The pictures must be from the previous owner as they date back to 2008. They are set-up correctly in the pictures anyway (2.3TL's).

Not all the 2.3's had donut drivers, I think the very first version had all "normal" looking mid-drivers, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-SDA-SRS-2-3-Speaker-Ad-2-pg-1985-Article-Frame-it-BEAUTIFUL-/141191450017?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20dfaa8da1 Polk came up with the donuts to tame the mid range a bit. Without the TL in the serial # I would wonder if someone tried to TL a pair of 2.3's, adding the SL3000's? I doubt it, but you never know when you have a seller that doesn't have a clue.

    $1400. OBO....

They look like 2.3TL's to me with the AI-1 SDA cable. Buy them before someone else does.

Without getting into specifics I wish anyone buying anything from that guy good luck; you'll need it and a lot of patience. Make sure you don't prepay either as he's not a man of his word.

To clear the air...........I previously had them and sold them to the current ebay seller. They are 100% 2.3TL's. The x-overs were never messed with as I never ended up using the gimpod boards. I put all hurricane nuts behind the drivers with hex machine bolts. I sold them because I now have a fantastic set of Acoustat Monitor 4's in their place. I enjoyed the Polks, but I am really enjoying these monsters :)

Also, he revised the ad to 2.3's. At first, he had them listed correctly as 2.3TL's. Oh well, he apparently doesn't know WTF he is doing.

Thanks for chiming in, I thought they looked familiar, and yes, you are absolutely right!

Musky, thanks for the clarification and for letting us know the provenance of the speakers. The speakers look great and it looks like you did a lot of work on them.

I texted the seller today and, as I said in in earlier post, I asked him why he changed the original listing from 2.3 TL to 2.3 and he said that he just recently noticed that the tag on the speakers did not state TL so he was now not sure if they were 2.3 TLs or not. Obviously, he doesn't know what he has, ha.

Re: price, if he hasn't done the Xovers $1400 or replaced the tweeters with RD-0198's his price is a little high. Really all that's been done is he installed hurricane nuts and cap head screws, and put on nicer end caps. Getting the Gimpod's boards would be a nice perq. Granted they don't come up for sale that often so that's a factor as well - depends on how badly you want them. I'd offer him a little less, maybe around $1000.

Some prefer the 3000 tweeters. The end caps are really nice and were selling for a few bills. The IC cable, boards and nuts/bolts and screws were about $300 total. I should have given him the original cord instead. No snags and were in primo shape. FWIW, I sold them for $1200.
