*rimshot*

Every winter, when I can no longer regularly ride one of my motorcycles, I fall back on an old classic favorite hobby of mine...woodworking. You're already familiar with my audio racks. But I have also made bookcases, tables, cabinets, wine racks, etc etc.
This post is to show off/showcase one of my favorite projects...cutting boards and butcher blocks. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of some of my biggest ones (did a 4inch thick 4ft by 3ft edge grain maple butcher block for a friend's kitchen remodel) but I have made at least a couple of hundred cutting boards over the last few years.
This latest batch was 38 boards including my first 4 end grain boards.

And here is a wall unit and a bar I built for a friend's basement remodel a few years back...

I didn't get any finished pictures of the bar (opposite end of the room from the wall unit) but the bar was faced in acid washed copper with aluminum panels treated with a grinder and backlit. Black granite top with maple cabinets and glass inserts in the doors...

Forgot to mention, the openings where the speakers are have custom fitted black grilles over them now. This was against my wishes as i knew the speakers and sub being in those openings were going to sound weird but he insisted...

....keep up the good work. you should try to make a living off it. you have got the talent.....just find a business partner or contact with an interior designer or architect. Of course once it becomes a business it is not as much fun.

I was a cabinet maker for 3 years out of college. Loved it.

    .....FOR got !

....from experience. Buy cabinet doors off the shelf from Hdepot or Lowes or anywhere. Build the cabinets around them.

You can't build them for less with quality. You would need more equipment and labor. Have choice of styles. Great for painted builtins.

...Also, you seem to know....for quality.....BALTIC Birch.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I enjoy it as a hobby but to make a living out of it, I would have to be able to compete with guys like Boos Blocks and the guys who come up with stuff like this:

    Cutting-Boards-6-019-Large.jpg

    and

    cutting_board_-_end_grain_-_maple___walnu_editedt.jpg

    and

    345389.jpg

Hehe. Needless to say, I enjoy making them for friends and relatives as gifts but beyond that...just dunno.

Guys like Jesse have my undying respect for their ability to restore wood furniture. *THAT* takes skill.

dee, you are correct. Typically, I do that but when I do a simple baltic birch or maple cabinet, the doors are little more than biscuit joined corners and dado/routered step to drop the front panels or glass into.

My ex has an entire kitchen full of custom made oak cabinets I built around pre-made doors from Home Depot hehe.

I think I may have a problem...an addiction if you will...

    More stock for boards...

Then I whipped up the materials to make 3 checkerboard patterned end-grain ones...these were before I glued and clamped em.
They are done and have been oiled once so far but I haven't gotten pics yet.

Heck I might even get a cutting board as well for the wife......
