On Saturday as the freezing rain was coming down we lost power to part of our house (stove, micro, fridge, dishwasher, family room and master bedroom. Originally thought was bad breakers! So with the horrible street conditions Sunady morning took a 2.5 hour walking/bus/walking trip to Home Depot for new breakers. Turns out on of the two electrical lines coming to the house was damaged during a recent street light replacement. So remember if you lose partial power call your electric company first and save money!

There are two legs that come into a normal residential. 120 and 120. Both combined make a 240 line. If you lose one leg of the two, all 240v appliances/utilities will not work properly (if at all) and everything attached to the open circuit will not work as well. Sorry you had to learn this the hard way. A multimeter would have saved you a lot of trouble.

^+1 Had a similar issue and fortunately I had a meter to check the voltage.

Actually, not a hard lesson at all. Had I had an electrician out, then I'd be crying over the dent in my wallet. I'll return the breakers, so all I'm out is $2.50 in bus fare.
