Marantz SR5001 AVR - my latest "should I buy" question

I have been offered an SR5001 for $100. It has supposedly been gone over by a local electronics shop and works perfectly. It comes with the original remote.

I have been wanting to pick up an AVR with preouts so eventually I can move up to a separate power amp but can't afford to put too much into the upgrade right now. I can probably sell my Yamaha for about the same money and would use the Marantz for my Monitor 7's in my bedroom.

So is anyone familiar with that Marantz model and would it act as a decent preamp when I move up to an external amp? Also, what model amp would work well with that combination of speakers and AVR?

I have the SR5001 and SR6001. Both have been stellar performers. My 5001 makes my Monitor 70's sound great. Does Marantz have Audyssey mic and remote and owners manual? They will all help. If you end up not liking it? Resale will be about a hundred. Good luck. D

The only negative thing I would say is that there's no HDMI pass-through on standby. It means that you will have to power up your entire system whenever you want to just watch TV, or get an HDMI switcher (and those things are very quirky). I have the same issue with my Marantz SR5004 and I'm in the process of looking for a replacement for that reason alone. That, plus it only offers one crossover point for all speakers. Sound-wise it performs excellently, however.

Thanks for the info guys. It does include the remote but no mic or manual. Can probably download the manual though.

As far as TV goes, I don't have cable anymore, so my antenna goes to the TV and I just use the TV speakers when I watch the local channels. Most of the time I am on the Roku box and always use the AVR for sound anyway, so pass-through shouldn't matter much unless I change things in the future and go back to cable.

Glad to know it's a decent performer though.

I have an SR5005 and it works great as a preamp (worked great as an amp too). I guess mine was the first year they put the HDMI pass through in them because I use it all the time. Only thing I wish it had that it doesn't is Audessey XT or better so I could eq the subwoofer.
