Need help picking speakers

It's time for an upgrade and I need some help picking up speakers for a nice sounding 2.1 setup.
Use: Primarily for music. Movies/TV is secondary usage. I mainly watch art/indie flicks which aren't heavy on special effects. I do care about clear dialogue, but don't need to feel the vibrations of on screen explosions. Maybe in the not-so-near future I may add more speakers and go to a 5.1 HT setup, but for now prefer something that is more musical.
Room: 20x20 ft open floorplan (Living room + Kitchen in 1 area). Hardwood floors/granite in kitchen.
Receiver: Sony STR-DH740 (7.2). Rated at 90 watts, but the surround back channels can be used to biamp the mains.
Which speakers/subwoofer would be a good match for me? Of course, I'll audition them before I buy, but looking for recommendations so I can target my auditions in the right direction.
I don't have a hard budget, but given the receiver, I think the speakers should definitely be sub-1000. Also currently online stores have promos for $300 off Polk subs with the purchase of Polk speakers (pairs) exceeding $500 which I think is a great deal. I was kind of looking at the TSx series (330 and 440... the dark cherry looks so good!)
Thanks in advance!

I think you AVR may be a little under powered for those speakers. I would suggest you look at bookshelf type speakers, unless you're willing to upgrade your AVR.

What are your current speakers and what don't like about the sound?Room: 20x20 ft open floorplan (Living room + Kitchen in 1 area). Hardwood floors/granite in kitchen.
A square room with all that hard surface area is going to make it very difficult to get good sound regardless of the gear and speakers.Receiver: Sony STR-DH740 (7.2). Rated at 90 watts, but the surround back channels can be used to biamp the mains.
Rated at 90 wpc with only 2 channels driven. Use more channels and the wpc are going to drop like a lead weight.Political Correctness'.........defined

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I am going to be underpowered with this AVR. Currently I'm using a pair of ancient R50s. Recently an ear infection left me with tinnitus and when I listen to my cousins RTi8s now, they sound way better than they used to before I got tinnitus. In short I need better speakers to compensate for my muddy ears.
Anyway, so I could break it into a few scenarios:
1) What speakers would you pair with the DH740?
2) If I go with the TSx440, which AVR would you recommend upgrading to?
3) How about the TSx330s?
Thanks! The lunatic is in my head. -
With either of your speaker choices I would go with Pioneer SC 71, or higher, Yamaha RX A1020 or higher, or Mirantz 5007 or higher. Accessories 4 less has factory refurbs for a few manufacturers at reasonable prices. Not Pioneer though.

I think a trip to a really good ear doc would be your best bet.Political Correctness'.........defined

Haha. Tinnitus = ringing in the ears. No cure.
But then again, it's something a lot of people willingly risk by going to loud concerts. The lunatic is in my head. -
It all depends on the cause.Political Correctness'.........defined

Every time I go scuba diving I end up getting an ear infection. Damn, I've been going about this all wrong. Instead of spending my coin on ways to make my RTi8's sound better by upgrading my speaker cables, power cables, applying Dynamat, and building acoustic panels, I should have instead tried to develop a good case of swimmer's ear!
Seriously though, sorry to hear about your ear troubles. Sounds like you're making the best of it. I bet the muddiness in your ears has helped filter out the RTi's brightness that everyone complains about.
