Are they a whole new line, or are they taking the place of the TSi line?

Just curious, I think they look nice..

I like the look of those two 8" passives on the 550T...looks beefy.

The flagship of the TSx Series is a floorstanding loudspeaker that boasts two 8-inch passive woofers capable of such smooth, natural deep bass extension that you may consider an additional subwoofer to be overkill. (Of course not!) The gorgeous curves and trendy brushed metal accents of this high performance floorstanding loudspeaker make it the perfect addition to any room, and any demanding audio system.

They have motors, so they are active. Someone messed up in the description.

Well the product descrip page says they are "subwoofers" so the term "passive subwoofer" could apply since they aren't self powered with attached plate amp, just a hunch.

ummmm no that is all sorts of wrong

I believe the description is correct. They are passive as in the speaker does not have a built in amplifier to drive them. This is common terminology. I think folks are getting confused with a "Passive Radiator" which does not have a magnet and voice coil and is driven by the sound pressure created by the other speaker drivers in that sealed chamber.

I do agree with you skrol, but they are active with current just NOT pressure like passive radiator. Either way they are reactive with an amp/receiver and they do have motors which passive radiator's do not. I was too late to retract my last after rereading and thinking about it...

I posted a question about this a few weeks ago as well re: the TSx550t - that whole "passive" descriptor had me confused and wondering whether it was a "passive radiator", but no, it is not. I don't have enough knowledge to say/know whether "active subwoofer" is the same as "powered subwoofer", but I think these mean the same thing?

If I see a woofer looking thing in a speaker enclosure and it doesn't say it's a passive radiator, I would assume "active" or whatever the heck descriptor you use to describe a speaker that you connect to an amplified signal; not built-in.

nice cut-away! where'd that come from?

None of Polk's lower series do very well on that rap test. But that's just a rule of thumb. Certainly the bracing on this speaker looks adequate. Overpriced, sure. That's the Polk strategy on the lower series. Introduce it at MSRP then gradually reduce the price till it starts to sell better. You can track that history from the M-70, 60, 50, to the Tsi 500, 400, 300, etc.

I heard the 330s at BB and they sound fine, more low end than the M-50, or TSI-300s (two 6 1/2" drivers vs the 5" make a difference there--plus a slightly larger cab, etc.).
