The Russki's did good I thought. Some pretty creative stuff. Anna Ntrebko singing directly to me in Russian was thrilling, though somewhat tempered by the lyrics being about some new recipes she has found.

During this part of the opening ceremony, the Russians not only knocked it out of the ballpark, they put it into orbit:

I agree. It was an excellent opening ceremony. I loved how it really showcased Russia's history and artistic culture (Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Tchaikovsky, Kandinsky, Chagall, etc). What a great tradition!

I was mainly referring to Russia's great artistic tradition - literature, poetry, music, ballet, etc - and really liked how the opening ceremony paid homage to that aspect of Russian culture.

I think the important thing here is that the arts are back in the former Soviet Union, albeit under the unacceptable eye of Putin. But hey we'll take what we can. And no one can say that the opening ceremonies did not hit it out of the park (Gorky Park).

Oh, and congrats to Sage Kotsenburg for taking the first GOLD in slopestyle. An awesome performance!

    Overall, I liked the ceremonies.

I did think the lighting of the Olympic Flame was a bit anti-climactic...I mean watching two people jog out of the venue and across a big empty lot for 30 seconds was a 'huh'? moment.

Recall Lily Hammer where the torch was ski jumped in? Recall Barcelona with the archer and the arrow shot?

Erik, Rodina and Tretiak are two of Russia's most decorated and world-recognized athletes, so it was quite fair for them to light up the flame, as well as for other famous elders to bring out the Olympic flag (i.e. Valentina Tereshkova - first woman in space). I highly doubt that Tretiak would ski jump the flame at his age :)

Umm, the Russian flag is red, white, and blue, too. I am thinking (perhaps hoping) you knew that.
