Have used this. Lead is not safe, Sand can have bugs.

Interesting. I have dynamatted the poles. That greatly helped vibration. Steel shot? Maybe. -
personally I would think that steel shot would have a ring to it. I've use lead shot and sealed both ends with silicone to keep lead dust from seeping out just in case I ever have another rug runner around.

I used pipe insulation to deaden my second VTI rack. The first one I had filled the posts with shot. One of the lower caps came off one post when I was taking it down and I had a fun time collecting the shot. The pipe insulation deadens the pipe. If one wanted to add mass, consider sourcing plastic pipe that would fit inside the insulation. Cut to length, cap one end, fill with material of choice with glue another cap on to seal it.

Thanks! I hope to prevent someone experiencing what happened to me with a VTI rack filled with lead shot. When I sold my old VTI rack I included the shot and explained what could happen if he ever lifted the sections with shot in the tubes. The lower caps can loosen from weight and vibration. Over time with heavy loads, the spike points can 'stick' in the caps of the lower section. You lift, it can pull the loosened cap off. He decided to go the pipe insulation route.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 *

I filled my stands with play sand, no mess involved. I did put silicone around the bottom but it was probably overkill. 50lb bag at Lowe's for $3.Display: LG 47" LCD | AVR: Marantz SR5005 | BD: Panasonic BDT-210 | CD/SACD: Oppo 980 |

Black or clear silicone sealant. Less messy but more expensive. We use it in motorcycle handlebars to deaden vibration."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

Great ideas. I like the idea of capped pvc filled cylinders. I wonder of wrapping felt or velvet around the pvc might absorb ringing

Lead shot for me, thank you very much. Fill the tube(s), attach the tops, wash your hands and you're done. Lead dust? It's not like one is shaking the stands to create any, you know!?!Political Correctness'.........defined

I'm with you here Jesse. I never quite understood the notion that lead shot used to fill the speaker stands would present a problem of poisoning anyone. It's not like you're eating the stuff. There's more damn chemical poisons in your carpets & kitchen cabinets that no one even blinks an eye at."2 Channel & 11.2 HT "Two Channel:Magnepan LRSSchiit Audio Freya S - SS preConsonance Ref 50 - Tube preParasound HALO A21+ 2 channel ampBluesound NODE 2i streameriFi NEO iDSD DAC Oppo BDP-93KEF KC62 sub Home Theater:Full blown 11.2 set up. -

I made a set of speaker stands a while back that were just PVC capped with oak top and bottom plates. Filled with sand they don't resonate at all. Not sure if lightweight felt would be enough to stop the reverberations.Display: LG 47" LCD | AVR: Marantz SR5005 | BD: Panasonic BDT-210 | CD/SACD: Oppo 980 |
