Recently, I was walking by the "$5.00 per" bin at the local Wal Mart; so, I decided to "dumpster dive."

When I came up with a dozen or so CDs, one was "Elvis: Inspirational," a compilation by Sony BMG.

I figured it would be a wasted $5.00, but because it had several of my favorite Elvis gospel and "spiritual" tracks, I said, "What the heck!"

When I started listening to it, I was stunned. The sound stage extended about 8 feet outside the SRSs, it was deep, Elvis was perfectly centered (which may or may not be an accurate rendition of his performance), and the instruments were also well located.

Moreover, his voice was clear and rich. Transients were great and the instruments were also very well rendered.

Has anybody else listened to this CD?

If so, what was your experience?

Any experience with two other CDs in this Sony BMG series -- "Elvis: Rock" and "Elvis: Country"?

Some of the corniest stuff in the world was done REAL right. Try Percy Faith's "Theme from a Summer Place". Corny as all get out until you listen to it on a good rig that can image.

If I remember correctly, the Elvis titles you mentioned are DSD remastered. Produced by Ernst Jorgensen, right?

I have "Rock" and "Country", but they're in storage. It's been a while since I heard them.

Ernst Mikael Jorgensen produced the CD.

I have found nothing in the material with the CD that explains how it was remastered.

If you get a chance to pull the others out of storage for a listen, I love to hear whether their sound impresses you.

I have seen those at our Walmart might have to check them out. I own the essential Elvis Presley remastered sounds great only Elvis I own but pretty fond of it. Here is some info on it on Steve Hoffmans site.

Looks like that compilation is the one to own. I'll likely make that my next "Elvis" purchase. I've got a couple of other compilations that are not great.

There's a wikipedia on the 'Inspiration' and 'Rock' CD's. Looks like the 'Rock' CD had lots of DSD remastered songs but the 'Inspirational' CD doesn't specifically list any.

Compilations and greatest hits CD's are hit and miss. I have several of them especially out of the $5 bins. The one I have been most happy with is "The Best Blues Album in the World...Ever!" and actually use B.B. Kings-3 O'clock Blues as a reference when demo'ing

I went through a period in which I went through the Wal Mart $5 bin every few weeks. Bought a few keepers including a Willie Nelson cd that my wife absolutely loves. Been in heavy rotation for about 6-8 months. Bought some other diamonds too, including Bonnie Raitt "Silver Linings". Both were well recorded with excellent song writing and musicians.

Wound up with a few that were mediocre, but hey, for $5 it was entertaining.

I picked that one up at the same time that I bought the "Elvis:Inspirational."

Haven't listened to the Willi Nelson yet.

Visited our local store, did the "dumpster" dive myself, got some Chicago, CCR, A. Franklin saw some Elvis, J. Cash and a few others.

Spent 15 bucks, got about 30+ or so songs. Other than tolerating the exceptional custom service, enjoying the tunes now.

Catchy thread title. I looked for those Elvis CDs today in the $5 bin and they were either gone or made it to the bottom of the bin. I have found a lot of keepers in the $5 bin at Walmart and check it out every time I shop there.

Well worth $5.00, if you don't have the tunes on other recordings.

Hands down, the best $5.00 random purchase I made was a "sampler" disc at Walmart -

Recorded impeccably. The staging, vocal texture is off the charts.

    Incredible CD

I had "New England Thrifty" living next door to me for about 20 years. It started out okay but by the time they up and left, the only thing I would have to do with them is if somebody said I could stab them to death. Cheap that borders on disgusting. Especially when you're secretly loaded.

Buying cd's for any amount of money shows you are not in that league.

    Thanks, I guess! :-)

Actually, "Yankee thrift" means "value for money" to me.

A good friend of mine once said to me when I was pondering a "bargain" purchase, "Phil, you can't afford to buy cheap."

His point, of course, was that if you always go for the apparently bargain priced item, you may end up spending more over time because that item fails to satisfy or just plain old fails.

Buy it once. buy it right. And that is the real bargain, even if you can find a lower priced item which claims similar quality.

Now, I'm not sure how that applies to "dumpster diving" for $5.00 CDs in the WalMart bargain bin!
