I am in audio Heaven!

MrBirons DacMagic w/ Pangea PSU arrived. He included a set of Aural Thrills RCA's which I will try out later. I quickly hooked up the BlackCat Coaxial cable I got from Pearsall01 to the DacMagic from my computer, selected a 96hz playback rate and connected Dougs IC's to the DAC and my Sunfire.

Pulled out my Harmony One, hit FLAC to select the right input, opened up XBMC, ran down to Simon and Garfunkle and queued up Sound of Silence, Mrs Robinson, Bridge over Troubled Water & Scarborough Fair..

The music started, my jaw hit the floor and I splooged all over myself and my gear.

Excuse me while I go get a towel.

So you're using SPDIF out of your PC, not USB?

Yes for right now. The USB device only showed a setting of 16/48.0 as an export option. The Coaxial allows for a 16/96hz incoming sample rate, and I figured higher was better. I know the DAC upsamples, but I figured if the signal was better coming in, it would be better coming out.

Also the USB had some noise in it somehow it sounded like. I didn't mess with it much, I like the coaxial cable quite a bit, so I used it.

If there is no isolation between device and computer, you can get noise from 'putie using USB. I've had it go both ways with non-isolated USB devices. That is quiet and some noise added.

    Mrs. Robinson, great song.

How would I know if its isolated or not? I am drawing a blank today.

That's the great thing about audio, that we can all listen and hear or prefer different things. I didn't really like the DacMagic very much when I tested it in the DAC shootout. In fact, I've never really liked the Wolfson chips that much (yeah I know the chip isn't everything), as they tend to be a little too laid back and not detailed enough for my taste.

It should appear in the specs. Isolation can be in form of 1:1 transformer or a chip.

The idea being that you use the DAC's power supply to power the USB input (not the computers power supply through USB cable) and no ground connection exists between the DAC and external device occurs.

When you were here, if I played music from my laptop to my diy DAC, that USB to I2S adapter had no isolation and had zero noise. I did nip the USB power wire and do power my USB module via a power supply in the DAC. However a ground connection does exist with the 'putie via the signal side with my current module.

Yes the above is well beyond my knowledge. Understand the intent but the implementation forget about it.
