I was putting a turkey on my medium BGE yesterday and opened the top and the whole top half of grill fell out of metal hoop and broke into fifty pieces! Probly going to cost me two bills to replace it. WTF? Peace. D

I've heard lots of stories about how fragile the BGE is. Hopefully they have good customer service!

Any chance cold temps + materials played a factor?

My parents gave me a nice weber for our wedding present and once we get into a house my father in law has a professional 3 piece propane setup he's going to give me.

    Nothing like grilling out!

It was cold out yesterday? Only thing I can think of is that the bolt and nut that holds the metal ring that holds top on worked its way loose?

    Dabutcher,

If you are the original owner, call the "mothership" and speak with them about your incident. BGE is usually pretty good about making their customers whole at the end of the day.

    The phone number is 770.934.5300.

I've had my Large since 1998 and they have taken care of my needs very satisfactorily.

Good luck and keep us posted as to how things turn out for you.

That's a real bummer, Dabutcher. Do you know what caused it?

Sorry bub but there is no substitute for a BGE. Well, unless you have a kuboto kobado grill. The next step up would be what Guy Fieri has in his backyard. Don't get me wrong, Webber grills are good but.....well, I'll just leave it at that.

Last night ordered top half of medium BGE from local Poolside Egg dealer that my wife bought it for me from. $145.00. Today I called BGE customer service and told them about my dilemma. They are shipping one to me for $95.00 plus twenty for shipping. I cancelled the local order. Thanks for all the help. D

The big green egg is different. It's the best slow cooker out there.
Some day, one will be mine.

Looks like a very nice grill..I'd like to try one out sometime...however I don't know how different it is..they have been using a variation of that in Japan for hundreds of years....

We've been just throwing heat at it (using fuel) to slow cook. A small well insulated device is sure new
to us. Witness all the "Weber" comments above. I've seen this in action at the local BBQ place.

That's good news. I recommend asking them if there is a max "torque" number to tighten the band on the lid to. There was one for mine when I bought it back in 1998 but the material, etc. has changed since then. You can also get on the BGE forums and post the question. I ended up adding a lock washer and extra nut to each of the bolts just because I had them around.

If you end up having to replace your gaskets, I recommend reading this blog and similar ones:

    http://eggheadforum.com/discussion/1160958/food-safety-cotronics-and-rutland-gaskets

I had to replace my gaskets and decided to instal one Cotronics gasket on the lower level. You can find all the details for replacing gaskets correctly.

I've had my BGE since 1998 or 1999. I have not had any problems to complain about. If you get the itch to upgrade your BGE to something considered a "step up" over the BGE, check out www.komodokamado.com.

Caution, they are a bit pricey.

HAHA!!! I flubbed that one up didn't I? I was close but definitely don't qualify for the cigar. Thanks for correcting that for me.
