I have a hp laptop that will not turn on!
My duaghter uses it for home work and
needed it last night and it was dead!
She used it 2 nights ago and had it on her bed,
and said she just shut lid when she was done
With it.
The laptop was not plugged in and was still
Powered when sitting on bed.
My thinking was battery was drained and needed
charges so I plugged to outlit but nothing.
I let it charge over night and this morning
No go.
There is a light in side of laptop that shows
White when charge and red when low. If I
Plug in its red then turns wire but will not
Power up. If I remove battery and just plug
In still nothing.
If I replace battery and unplug no light on
Side and no power.
So now I am thinking melt down being that
It was on bed and running with lid down and got
Way too hot! She needs PC for school work and
I can't afford a new PC and want to know what
You guys think.
Thanks in advance

Inside the case there is another battery...like a watch battery...initializes the IOS...if this goes..nothing will come up..charging your main won't even help...sounds like when she closed the lid,it was not in hibernate mode and that case battery discharged when your main ran out of power...they are a pain to get to...most models you are dealing with beaucoup little screws to get into the location...not impossible, just a pain...those batteries are a lot cheaper than a new unit though...

usually the CMOS battery will show signs of dying. settings change without warning, time and/or date will not hold correctly, etc. it is possibly it did die though, so you would need to remove the case and find it, then go to a department store. they are similar to a watch battery and are common, you just need to have the proper one. There also may be instructions on line at HP which would help you locate the battery inside the shell.Polk Lsi9

My step son used to fry his h/p laptop on a regular basis a few years ago. Leave it running, sit it on the bed and throw clothes on top so the thing couldn't breathe. Good luck with yours, hope it turns out to be a simple fix for you...

Agree with Lasereath..
Been there done that with my HP... it was a sign the battery was just plain dead and needed to be replaced. I spent 110 on a replacement battery and that seems to have fixed things in my case....
Also buy one of those laptop elevation platforms... You probably overheated the laptop and it wont do anything until it comes out of protect mode, which I have done to my laptop as well. After resetting it (and making sure the fan intake and exhaust were clear) it booted back up.
Let us know whats up.... if you still cant get it, let us know and I will PM you my phone number and perhaps we can get it up together..
If you were closer to Indianapolis I would just say let me snag it and take a looksie myself...."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
Thanks guys, will take a look inside tonight!
I love the game operation! :-) -
And as a FYI they are not super expensive... my wife bought a refurbed dell from a reseller (with warranty) for 150 bucks shipped to our door. It didnt come with a full office suite, but I get a discount at work on that so it wasnt a biggie.
Also look at the Dell D20's for sale in the flea market here..."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
Hey thanks for all the help guys , I tried some
Of the sugestions and to no luck!
I even tried battery from wife's PC, it's the
same one as I have and same thing. I guess it
Is shot so I'll look at getting another.
Thanks jon -
If it was the battery it should still start up with the battery removed and plugged into power, so likely not that...
The cmos battery should not stop it from booting either, it just won't hold settings for the BIOS (system time, boot order).
Chances are the computer over heated and loosened some solder points on the motherboard, this is a guess off hand from what you stated and the symptoms you're describing. It's a bummer, but if this is the issue it will likely cost more than it's worth to fix it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, hopefully I'm wrong... good luck. -
I am new around here so I don't know if you would feel comfortable doing it, however I own a tech support company, and given your situation, if you get really desperate, if you want, mail it to me and I will see what I can do with it and mail it back for the cost of the shipping. Understand completely if the time it would take, or me being a stranger on an internet forum doesn't work for your situation, I wont take offense!
