SI is the best chip in DVD. Faroudja is a very close second. The Denon 1200 is super and has this chip.

The faroudja is more video like an the SI is more film like, but the differences are very small. Both give a STELLAR PQ.

To get the most from the player, make sure to use cables that can carry progressive scan and HDTV frequencies properly (without signal loss).

Hate to burst you bubble Doc, but:-

If SI is the best chip in DVD then why Denon 5900 uses Faroudja FLI-2310.

I knew Faroudja was planning the release of the FLI-2310, but I didn't realize it made production in the 5900. Good call, Ham.

Clearly, the Faroudja in the lower Denon's is not the 2310, though.

I haven't seen the 2310 in action, so I can't comment on PQ but suffice it to say, if it made the 5900, it's gotta be incredible.

Agree with you Doc, SI is more film like.

Looks like Denon keep changing there decision to use either Faroudja or SI. The old discontinued Denon DVD-9000 THX Ultra in fact used SiI504 which is also found in both 2900 and 2200.

I'm just wondering why $2000 Denon 5900 is not THX Ultra Certified. Seems like SiI504 is better than new FLI-2310. Your're right Doc, SI is the best. I love SI personally BTW.

Also I'm debating myself to get Denon 2900 or wait for Blue-Ray players to come out. So far my 5 year old Toshiba SD-3109 working flawlessly. Would love to buy Denon 2900 though.

    I found an interesting thread!

thinking about it... I would say the 2900 is the second best purchase I have made for my HT and if your wondering the SVS remains at the absolute best.

Seems like there are really only two big horses in the DVD chip race these days: Silicon Image and Genesis Microchip (which bought Sage which owned Faroudja). The Silicon Image Sil504 has been on the market for about three years now although its implementation has been advanced over time. The Genesis Microchip FLI-2310 has been out for about a year and is specifically designed for use with a DVI output to allow scaling for fixed pixel displays. Both are progressive scan converters though.

The reason the FLI-2310 is used on the Denon 5900 and not the Sil504 is that the Sil504 is not compatible with a DVI output. Silicon Image appears to be working on HDMI (integrated secure digital audio and video) chips now and their integrated chips may be the wave of the near future.

As with a lot of things in the audio/video world, a single chip is not the most important thing to look for. The FLI-2310 used in the Denon 5900 is the same chip used in the Samsung DVD-HD931. By most accounts I've read, the Samsung doesn't have outstanding picture quality--not because of the Genesis progressive scan converter, but because of the inexpensive parts that make up the rest of the video signal chain in the Samsung product.

The earlier Faroudja progressive scan converters introduced about three or four years ago really impressed people with the deinterlacing quality compared with other chips available at the time from companies like Zoran and Silicon Image. Some of the relatively inexpensive Phillips, Denon, Yamaha, and Panasonic DVD players available a couple of years ago had Faroudja chips which provided excellent deinterlacing. There still seems to be a perception that Faroudja progressive scan conversion is superior to anything else on the market. While this may be true to an extent, the technology seems to be evolving at a rapid pace.

Incidentally, I have a Denon 2900 with the Sil504 and a Panasonic CP72 with the older Faroudja chip. The Panasonic still provides a sharper picture to my eyes than the Denon, but the color depth and overall picture quality of the Denon 2900 seems quite a bit better than from the CP72. Although I have a TV with a DVI input, I'm not tempted to try it out until standards evolve some more.

Both companies have Web sites which have some interesting information: www.siliconimage.com and www.genesis-microchip.com. Interestingly, Silicon Image won a legal fight against Genesis last year for patent infringement.
