SEP 6V6 back in the crib...

I used to own a Decware Mini-Torii. Had to sell ALL my gear after some tough times, as many of you know. Now I'm back on my feet, college funds going, and a few toys for dad. I'm still waiting for my Tortuga Audio LDR so I'm toying with the MT and Rachel driving sub and monitors separately. HE-500 sound FANTASTIC on the MT!
Luckily I kept a few premium tubes like some Mazda 6V6. I had my friend Eric W. in Tampa test them on his Amplitrex along with some nice E80CC, Mullards I think - single getter.
The MT has an upgraded 20 step attenuator, and a switch to toggle the OC2 input tube regulation. So you can hear it with or without, but also if you had a tube failure, you could run w/o. More thoughts to come. 6V6 single ended is creamy! I'm running the Zu Unions with it now...
Since my space is limited, and I share the room, I have made some compromises with speaker placement etc. I have isolated the components on Feet of Silence (spring-based), and turntable will be on a separate, dedicated table.
Pics uploading now, taking forever with my crap Internet here.

Awesome! Thanks for the photos!
Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

No instant gratification with the niche custom stuff I guess. I guarantee it will be worth the wait. It will be at or an even higher level than a Nantais build. Jean started the Lenco revival with the famous Building High Quality Turntables at the Home Despot thread. Follow that recipe and you get the same results.
Have you read what Arthur Salvatore thinks of his Nantais Lenco? He says it's the finest table he's owned. Nice to hear you can compete with $53K Forsell's.

Yeah, I am very pleased with the sound here. The Krell amp brought it all together. I think Arthur actually lives in Tampa somewhere. Probably in seclusion with all that nice gear!
I picked up an AT33PTG/II to try first on my road to vinyl recovery; this Summer I'll probably pick something else up. Soundsmith maybe?
Right now I am troubleshooting the Mini-Torii. It's dual-mono, and the right channel suffers a loud buzz which you can hear with the attenuator at 2pm,, sitting in sweet spot almost 10ft away or with headphones. The noise actually goes away at position 20 and will increase as you go down through 18-14. Very weird. I did some basic troubleshooting and the noise is on either input of the amp, with or without input cable, and the right channel has 13.3mv AC on it wide open whereas the left has 2.0mv wide-open. The right front of chassis was dented when it arrived. Rather shocked they didn't double box going overseas.
Sigh...
Also, it seems that the right channel (the offending one) had it's output tube wired differently from the left, with pins 1 and 8 un-tied!SCompRacer wrote: »No instant gratification with the niche custom stuff I guess. After setting up that AT33EV in Blakes system, I dunno if I'd spend more on a cartridge, unless it were insane dollars. My 17D3 doesn't have much more life left so I need something soon. IIRC you had the SS Voice before. I didn't have the coin at the time I bought the linear air bearing arm from you to snag that as well. Lots of bang for the buck with SoundSmith.
Some older discussion from audio asylum between the AT33EV and PTG.

Guess this is my little home on Polk where I will keep you all updated.... : )
Skipped the Denon S1 in favor of the Audio Technica Art-7 - since I have a high gain phono stage I thought I would put it to use. Loved what little I heard of the At33PTG/II, but Scompracer will give us the final word when he gets it on his MG-1 airbearing.
The Tortuga Audio LDR volume control is back, with a buddy. A custom LPSU. Waiting on forgotten fuse for the LPSU, but so far the LDR works really well with the Auralic Vega.

Higher end AT has quite a following in some places, preferred over the heavier advertised cartridges. They have been making cartridges for a long time. Looking forward to the PTG/II. Still haven't built a better phono stage. Someday.....
Nice PS upgrade. If I wasn't so happy with my DAC I'd have an Auralic. Love that little amp. I used to have a STASH of 6V6. Even the rare Swiss ones. This Summer I am going to buy another set of the metal-base Visseaux from Upscale:
The Auralic Vega has a digital volume control that after about level 60, starts to lose resolution. The Vega has a very hot output and on my system 60 is quite loud.
Also, I get the benefit of another input for my phono, and dual output to feed the 6v6 (running sub or headphones).
Rich - I'm excited to get the Art7 and eager to hear how you like the PTG. Are you use the fluid damping at all on the MG1? Cool to hear about Salk using the Vega. It's a keeper. For Sale 2019:

I tried damping with my two arms/cartridges but preferred without. After all I'm an accused detail/air freak. I think a larger and more rigid trough is needed. IIRC you expressed that as well. I ought to ask a friend to make one.
Looking forward to the PTP/II. Compared to the 33EV, it is said to have a bit more weight in the bass, better sound staging and dimensionality. A real toe tapper. Aside from internal differences, externally the PTP/II has a Gold-plated solid boron cantilever with MicroLine stylus while the 33EV has a Duralumin tapered pipe cantilever with nude elliptical stylus. It was compared to the Lyra Helikon which retailed at nearly twice the price.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 * -

Looking good! ART-7 is working out well here with some minor tweaking needed. I tried Baerwald and lots of distortion on test tracks on HFN. I'm tweaking with Lofgren now.
Lenco motor replaced and I think it's overall a better motor. Last one had 3 dots in sharpie, and this has 4. Secret code?

I was lucky. Swapped cartridge, stuck arm back on and it hit the inner and outer null perfectly. No arm tube length change required. Azimuth perfect. I ran out of VTF adjustment and had to add just a touch of weight. Looks like another custom weight in my future, but sticky putty is cheap...lol Stuck a couple of my fav albums on and wowsa. Haven't touched VTA yet. I'm a thinkin to go further up the AT line when the time comes.
I figured you had a motor problem. It is a nice high torque design with adjustable field windings. I would bet Peter uses the proper lube and has the preload adjustment down. Stuff happens...
