Ok, problem:

My shop is 60 feet away from my main house, and I don't have RG6 runs to it. I currently use DirecTV in the main house.

Question:
Is there some sort of device that can wirelessly transmit my DirecTV signal to the shop? I realize I could run cable, but that would involve some things that I'd rather avoid, if possible.

60 feet? Common Steve, just buck up and run the RG6. In the long run, you will appreciate it. It may be some work, but it will be more reliable and probably cost you the same or less.

Bill, I think that will be my best option...I'm thinking there will be just enough room in the existing conduit.

All these wireless senders operate at high frequencies (to increase bandwidth/amount of info transferred), meaning that any obstacle will greatly reduce the signal strength. As previously mentioned, running another RG6 run is the best solution here.

Buy another cheap dish…ebay, etc. and install it at the shop. You can either carry your receiver from your house every time or order another receiver solely for the shop. $5/month rental fee.

Forgot, I have an extra older (approx. 10 years) dish at home. It has the mounting tube; don’t know if I have the mounting bracket. I’m out of the country so I won’t be able to check until this weekend. You may not receive every HD channel with it but should receive most. I’ll give to you for free if you pay the shipping. PM me if you’re interested.

If you have space in and access to the conduit run, run a cable. All you need is a snake.

Mount on pole just outside the building. You will tire of watching the same channel in the shop or having someone change channel in house. Put a receiver in shed permentantly.

If I "fish" the RG6 over, I'll definitely spring for a dedicated receiver. Can't do a pole type setup, HOA doesn't allow it.

trencher rental in these parts is $80/4 hours and they provide the trailer, fyi - since i was looking it up yesterday anyway. I'm assuming trenching is not the part you're worried about though.

We're about to be building our shop and I'm running a sweeping elbow out 18" under grade and capping it off, just in case.

I had the Nyrius module; worked pretty well but it was in the same house. Not sure if you could actually change the channels when it isn't in the same house - I was able to do so with the box downstairs and the receiver upstairs.

In reference to those who recommended setting up a 2nd dish, have you tried to align any of these newer triple LNB dishes? They are very difficult for a DIY'er to align properly. Not like the old single LNB ones that could be aligned by hand using the signal tones from the receiver.

When I say newer, I'm talking about the ones that DirectTV switched to back around 2006. Single LNB dishes are pretty much obsolete.

Steve, I'm glad you see the light on running RG6.

I've got what I believe to be about 4" conduit running over from the house for all the electrical in the shop (RV 50amp ckt/lights/bunkhouse ckts/etc) to the shops own breaker box. I think I have enough room for a run of RG6, the tougher part will be getting the RG6 to my network box (from the incoming box outside of the garage) in the attached garage, as flat roofs only allow about 3ft of crawl space. My attached garage is all insulated/drywalled in. I have an access door, but there's no way to actually get up there---at least not an adult.

Cody, you'll be glad you ran that conduit.

I'm sure if you look at it long enough, you'll figure out a way to access it. 3ft seems like enough space to move around in. The below floor crawl space at my old house was only about 3ft tall and I did plenty of cable wiring in there.

Steve, if you have to run a cable for it, think about running a couple other cables so perhaps you can setup a small "garage" setup in there..... with say another Squeezebox or the like so you've got some of your good tunes.

Pickup a set of Monitor 7's, 10's etc.

We just happen to be the last bordering properties that got caught under "3 Canyons Ranches" HOA. Luckily our HOA is pretty mild, and they generally leave the ranch property people alone.

Good news, construction to finally FINISH my shop repairs from the 9 June storm have resumed!! They were doing some trim carpentry on the bunkhouse, replaceing the bottom 30" of the mdf skirt aroubd the bottom that got soaked/rotted/. Luckily no signs of mold on the inside wall or plate. The scaffolding was constructed to tear-out, redo the exterior stucco. They just need to do a little replacement drywall in the bunkhouse; texture and paint---and that part will be done. I was delightfully surprised to see the bunkhouse framed on 16" centers/fully insulated.

The entire South wall exterior will be ripped out and re-stucco'd due to do underlying OSB rot from leaking rain water; the remaining 3 walls will get wired/re-stucco'd on top of existing stucco. All garage doors/trim will get painted. $54k all said and done, thank God for insurance--though we'll still come out-of-pocket about $6k.

If you use that existing conduit with that electrical package in it..make sure you use RG6 quad shield fooded cable...the extra shielding you will be thankful for...to keep out emf interference..the flooding compound will keep moisture out..just a thought...
