When were Polk S4's released and how long were they sold?

Just curious. I picked up a pair on ebay based on their specs. I'm going to use them for surround speakers in a home theater I'm building in the basement. I just hooked them up to test them as mains and I'm pretty impressed. Pretty clear. Happy with my deal, but now I'm curious as to just how old these puppies are? Nice that you can look up specs on old speakers on Polk's website, but it would be nice if they gave the dates they were available. Anyone?

I had the link, but unless I'm missing something, it doesn't tell me their distribution date range. Right? Is it there, and I'm blind (my wife thinks so).

    Thanks for the welcome!

Yes, I like them a lot. Crystal clear. I cranked them as mains to test them out. Pushed some Van Halen through them at near max volume from the basement. Wife was upstairs and thought I was on the main floor. She was singing along. I'm quite impressed with how clear they are pushing them hard. I wouldn't hesitate on S6's for $20 IMO.

Thanks Ken. I knew they were close to there, but wasn't sure!

Yeah, these will be for 2 channel music only. I really like the Polk products from the 90's, my main systemis all the RT line. I will probably scoop the S6's up. Thanks for opinion, didn't mean to crash your thread, just wondered how they'd sound alone.

I had some like-new S4s in a spare bedroom setup last year until a friend of a friend talked me into selling them to him for $80. Great little speakers, loved the sound of them!

It seems the S-series consensus around here is S4<S6<S8 and the S10 is just plain bloated on the low end of the frequency response.

db: Nice S6's for $20? JUMP on it!!

The S series was released in 1991. I have a pair of S8 and S4. The S8 sound quite nice, very natural and pleasant. The S4 are decent on the top end but the bass sounds slightly boxy and you get some port noise (chuffing) when driven hard. The S6 and the S8 were the sweet spot with the S8 having a little better bass.

S6 for $20 is a no-brainer... Go for those and if you don't like them you can part them out for LOTS more. Drivers for the S series are a little hard to come by.

Well I just picked up the S6's for $20, few marks on the cabinets, nothing major by a long shot. All the drivers look like brand new, original owner and still had the book that came with them.
