Tech question on RT2000P

I am a bit of a busy body, can never leave good enough alone. I have a pair of nice 2000's, and also a few sets of RT55's. As much as I like the 2000's, I love the midbass and rich sound from the dual drivers on the 55's. I have located a set of bezels from a pair of RT800 with the dual drivers and have been considering modding my towers for dual drivers. Questions are, is there anything in the top of the tower that would prohibit modding the opening for dual drivers? And second, would adding onther driver cause a problem with xover performance and ohm ratings? Any other potential issues I haven't thought of? Thanks

Why not sell the RT2000's and run the RT55's with a couple of small subs? IMO, that would trump anything you would hope to gain by modding the 2000's.

Anyway, here are the schematics for all the RT55's, RT800, RT2000p, etc. The 55 has more components between the three.
    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?38755-POLK-AUDIO-Speaker-Wiring-Schematics-amp-More-ALL-MODELS-except-SDA

...and yes, wiring two drivers in series will change the load. Generally a lower ohm driver is used(Two drivers in series) so that the sum is not too high. The crossover is designed around the load of the drivers.

I have 2 sets of 55, FX500 surrounds, CS400 center, and an SVS PB12 plus 2 sub. The RT2000's are kinda like an old friend. I don't really need to sell them or really use them. I just thought it may be a fun project, just didn't want to hack them up to find they wont work. I appreciate the link with the information. How do you like your 3000's? A friend of mine just bought his second set, nice setup.

Don't hack them up as you described. You'd have to change the cabinet, and the crossover, not worth it. Sell them and fund some other upgrades on your audio journey.

I am not interested in hacking them up, that's why I started the thread. I wouldn't even attempt unless I knew before hand that it could be done with no issues. I really have no desire to sell, I enjoy them. They are very near mint condition and sound very good. I was just thinking about a project with them, was only thoughts. I know except for the bass, they come nowhere near the sound of the 55's, which is what had me thinking if they only had the second driver. but I didn't want to cut the cab open to find no space behind or mess up the ohm rating or crossover. I will leave them be and enjoy. All though not a 3000P, they are very nice and sound very good.

Which is why you should sell them. You said you really have no use for them so why keep them ? I understand sentimental reasons, but sometimes we sell unused gear to finance new toys when the wallet gets thin.

I really want a set of RT3000's and a CS1000. They just keep eluding me or people want stupid amounts for them. I may put the 2000's up and see what happens. I also have an extra CS400 center in very good shape, would make someone with nothing a decent start I guess.

I really like the cs400 center....hard to top for the coin. The 3000's are going to be a basket of parts issues. Believe me, you'll get better sound with todays speakers and subs.

Yeah, I know. A friend of mine has an RT5000 system. I just helped him last week take a bad amp and 2 bad drivers out to get repaired, but they sound so good when they work. I don't know why, but I am a fan of the RT line, finding its hard to sway to something else. I know they are getting old, but I love the beefy look they have. Time will tell, I am always looking to see whats out there, I may upgrade one day. The CS400 and RT55's sound so good, and I only have FX500 surrounds, but they sound good for what they are.

I'd say if you wanted to look into any newer series that instills the feel of the older RT series, I'd say go with a pair of RTi A9's for fronts... the same thing applies to these, as do with any of the newer speakers... you'll have to upgrade external amplification if you want them to dig deep. I've heard great things about the A9's in regards to home theater, they're just power hungry ;P I love the RT setup I have (once all fixed); however, the newish RTi A series seems to do well when fed well.

Does anyone in this thread have anymore useful info for him, taking the route of modding them? It would be a neat project if anything can be done to them. He obviously wants to keep them (they're pretty cool & intimidating to look at), as he likes them as they are, but is just curious, as you see in his OP, if he can do anything to them to improve them.

The RT3000 is way better than the RT2000.

Keep looking and you'll find a nice RT5000 system. Just remember, the complete RT5000 cost around $7,500 new in 1998 dollars. $1,500 or so for a nice one now is a steal.

I would keep the RT2000's I think even if I found a set of 3000's, was just looking for a fun project. I love the RT55's and thought if I could get that extra driver in the 2000's towers would add some pop.
