well who here has used 6sn7 tubes? Have you ever rolled in 6180,6BL7 or 6BX7 in there place? According to the link in my first post these are Excellent Direct substitutions for 6sn7...But I'm thinking more for TV than Audio...but the prices of the two 6BL7/6BX7 are 1/4 of what 6sn7's go for. It also says that the 5692 tubes are only rated as "good" as a sub for 6sn7. Just cant find anything on 6180 so who knows.

I would love to find a more affordable tube than the prices I'm seeing on 6SN7s . . .

I wouldn't hold your breath. If there was a suitable direct sub, audiophiles would be all over it long ago. I doubt very much there are any holy grail subs out there as the tube thing is a very mature game. 5692's are certainly much better than "good" subs, at least when it comes to audio applications.

Many time the old tube manuals can't be relied upon 100% as today's tube circuits are certainly a bit different for audio and back then they were talking about TVs.

I'm not just trying to cut down on learning curve. I do not think I will be getting any 5692's as I've been seeing some that the seller states "just above mimimum" and they sell for 200.00+.

Thanks Brock Knowing that the 6sn7 was a TV vertical hold tube I wondered how it's audio application would carry over to subsitutes.

Actually Ivan a nice pair of 50's SYLVANIA 6SN7's chrome domes are hard to beat.

    Like these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/161182924676

Also bought some early 50's CBS/Hytron from same seller like both but to me the CBS/Hytron's are a bit bloated in the bass. Much more bass than the Sylvania's but to me the CBS are a little flabby. I like both but CBS can be a bit much with bass heavy tracks. Wanting to get these :http://www.ebay.com/itm/191026997919?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
    and these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/121245882620?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I have not heard any Raytheon's both were at the top of a list I found on another website Cheap enough to try anyway.

I used the shuguang treasure CV181z's in place of some stock 6sn7's. The originals were not very good, and the shuggies are way more musical.

They are very quiet and velvety smooth in combination with the same kt-88's

    My Yaqin MC100B has:

Matched quad of Shuguang 50 years Black Treasures KT-88's

Matched quad of Shuguang 50 years Black Treasures CV-181Z's

Matched Pair of Tesla NOS E83CC's

This combination was a dramatic upgrade in my amp from the stock tubes however I have no other comparisons as I just went straight to those.

Well Mikey that makes sense to me. I have tossed around the idea of Sophie Electric 6sn7 and the cost is on par with NOS premium tubes.

They are expensive, but if you go thru rolling a bunch of them it will probably take 200 hours per roll to get them burned in, and then you have to sell the ones you don't like, and may end up with the Sophia's in the end.

Maybe it's just best to go with the Sophia's and see how much they improve the sound, and if you like them call it a day and move on to the next section of the rabbit hole.
