Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes recently announced they are leaving the Allman Brothers Band at the end of the year. A link to the Rolling Stone article:

That's gonna leave a mark...

That sucks but I understand why. Haynes and Trucks are highly creative and, let's face it, the ABB isn't the greatest vehicle for their talents. Of course this is just my humble opinion.
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Until I read the article I didn't even know Gregg Allman was still kicking. I'd like to think ABB would take this opportunity to maybe bow out on top, not necessarily retire but move in another direction. We shall see.

Watch, Dickey Betts will return to the band.

I saw the ABB a few years back and was disappointed. As talented as these two are, I think they're making a good decision. I couldn't help but compare the show I saw with DT and WH to the original lineup at their peak, Live at the Fillmore East in '71. Something was missing, the burning passion and creativity weren't there.

The thing that really shocked me was how bad Jaimo looked. He had put on ~ 100 lbs., and when it was time for the drum solo he got up from his set so another guy could take his place. Butch rocked on, but I felt a little shortchanged.

And here's a piece of trivia: the nights those shows were recorded (eventually released on "Live at the Fillmore East" & "Eat a Peach"), the ABB was the opening act. Guess who the headliner was?

Johnny Winter And. I still consider their live album from the concert to be the equal, if not better than, any other live rock/blues album. Johhny's drummer in And, the great Bobby Caldwell, used to play quite a bit with the ABB as a percussionist and played with them that night. Dude must have been tired after playing for 6-7 hours!

Didn't ABB pretty much kick him out due to substance abuse issues? Last time I saw Betts play they absolutely tore it up, but I was under the impression there was some real bad blood between them.

Watch. The bad blood will get pushed aside. The ABB needs a guitarist and Dicky Betts can't fill a tiny theater as a solo act.

Yeah, when I saw Betts play I wasn't expecting anything good. I'd heard horror stories about him being too messed up to play, forgetting lyrics and songs etc.

Dickey didn't want to do anything different. He refused to even change the set list towards the end.
That coupled with the drinking and anger issues got him fired.
He would sit on the bus and refuse to go on stage sometimes.Once at Great Woods it took almost 2 hours past stage time to get him off the bus to play.
Warren had already left once and did them a huge favor coming back.Im surprised he stayed this long.
Derek is doing well with tedeschi trucks band and built a studio and getting into lots of production work. Also he doesn't want to be there sans Warren.
Gregg is working on new solo stuff along with a movie of his life.
Maybe a reunion show occasionally after this year but I'd say 45 years is it for the ABB.

Y'know...me, either... although, of course, such sentiments are oft viewed as heresy... sort of like saying "I don't care for Led Zeppelin".

Wait, what? I never saw much in them, either, except excessive teen-aged testosterone...

Maybe Warren can dedicate more time to Gov't Mule, the last couple of releases have been kind of bland. The Mule will be in Des Moines on the 19th of next month, I just might have to attend. I think Dereck And Susan have a good thing going on, as far as ABB, time to retire IMHO.

I absolutely love some of their stuff, like Revelator. The new(er) album, Made Up Mind, is a mess though. The engineering and production make it sound like an AM radio, and make all the songs sound alike: no highs, no lows, very compressed, and recorded at a low level. Hard to hear individual instruments, and the songs are mostly boring. I hope they can get these issues sorted out (Derek is listed as a producer), cause that band has soooo much potential.

    Oops, sorry for the derail! Back to our regularly scheduled thread . . . . . . . . . .

Mule is a live band for all intents and purposes. The main thing i like about their studio stuff though is that they lay everything down on 2 inch tape and use tubed mic's so the sound (especially on vinyl) is nice.but i hardly ever listen to studio stuff since their power has always been the live show.
This past Halloween and New Years they had Robby Krieger with them and did a slew of Doors stuff, and it's very well done.

This may open up Derek to more side projects, which could be a good thing. I saw Dickey Betts four or five years ago and he was great, but I've heard lately he may not have the road stamina so I wouldn't think he'd be rejoining ABB. In fact, I think I've heard some talk that Gregg's health status may not be good again and there is a benefit for him real soon I think I heard somebody say they noticed on the ABB site. This is all sounding like a you-better-come-and-see-us-now-while-you-can kind of thing....

At the Fillmore East 1971, Mountain was the warm-up band, and The Allman Bros were the headliners. It was simul-cast on WNEW FM in New York, and I taped it onto a Vivitar stereo cassette deck. The Allman Bros. "Live at The Fillmore East" album was that show that I taped. Mountain would release their set onto an album some time later.

And your cassette version of that show probably sounds better than some of the remasters that are out there!

George, you were there and I wasn't, but there's this: http://www.concertvault.com/the-allman-brothers-band/fillmore-east-march-13-1971.html See the 3rd paragraph.

The concert you're referring to appears to be from June 1971, just before the Fillmore East closed. ABB Live was recorded from shows in March 1971.

I meant he was there in the sense of being aware of the concert in real time in order to tape it.

I saw gregg 1/4. He looked healthy and had good color. he was having fun. his vocals were vibrant as well. helps to be sober. i've seen footage where he was out of it. not these days. i would def see his show again
