My 1st pair of SDAs but.....

I picked up a pair of 1Cs yesterday without the ic cable. I have never listen to a pair before. I set them up for a listen, the left side sounds good but it sound like the right side stereo drivers are not working properly. I used a 12ga wire for an interconnect and when I did that the the dimensional drivers seemed to work properly. All drivers move freely without scratching. I got the following reading with an ohm meter on the terminal:

Ic pin 2 to black. Right 2.6 left 2.1
Ic pin1 to black. Right 0.0 left 0.0
Ic pin 1 to pin 2. Right 2.7 left 2.2
Ic pin 2 to red. Right 4.5 left 3.2
Red to black. Right 7.3 left 4.0
Ic pin 1 to red. Right 7.3 left 4.0

In the right speaker I verified they are the correct drivers and wired correctly. I also look at the crossover, but I didn't see anything visually I would consider an issue.

I figured my next step would be to switch stereo drivers with the left speaker in order to confirm or eliminate the drivers as the problem. Any troubleshooting advise would be appreciated.

Is your amp common ground? It sounds like it's not, STOP playing them with the interconnect cable till you find out...

Bad juju can happen to your amp, and speakers...

My amp is common ground. It appears I have a bad driver. I pulled both stereo drivers. The bottom reads 0.0, the top reads 3.2. So now what do I do? Can the driver be fixed or is it toast as I suspect? If I buy new, do I get one or two? If I buy 2 do I put them in the same speaker or one in each? Is there something I should be looking at that caused the drive to go bad? Can I wire it temporarily so only one stereo drive is hooked up? Will that work or cause other problems?

Ohmmeter testing? Sure that's a zero-point-zero reading, not an OPEN reading?

I'd expect open much more than shorted, especially since your meter shows consistently higher resistance on the right speaker.

First Guess: broken lead from voice coil to blade terminals where the two wires from the crossover attach.

Ah. I guess you are correct the reading is actually 0.L I'm pretty much a nob. I put the probes on the 2 wire directly and still get 0.L, same think at the nubs by the dust covers.

If it were me, I'd buy ONE new speaker driver from Polk, or buy "good used" replacements from eBay or Craigslist or this forum.

MW6511s tend to be rare and expensive in the used market...buying new may be your best/fastest problem-solver. Call Polk Customer Service and ask 'em.

    Yes 6511 are quite rare.
If you order from Polk please report back how well their stock is holding, I like always having one spare.

Well I'm up and running. A BIG thank you to Mike for helping me out with the driver I needed. In the meantime I fabricated an I/C cable that should hold me for awhile. I'm listening to Bob James Obsession as I type this with Alice in Chains Unplugged in the que. Sounds really good considering I have a pool table in the middle of the room. I was advised this would negatively impact the sound but even with the bad driver I felt the deal was too good to pass up. I'm real curious how they'll sound without the obstruction. At some point I'll set then up in the living room to get the full effect.

Overall condition in very good. The fabric on the side panels is loose in a few spots and someone shot a few brads into them. The tops have a few stains. The front grills and baffles are in great shape. And as far as I'm concerned they sound great!

I've had to reglue the side panels on both of my pairs. Easy to do and makes a huge improvement. Pry off, carefully. Use spray adhesive sparingly. I've used Liquid Nails to secure again. I used some wood strips on the top, bottom and sometimes middle with bar clamps overnight so they adhere evenly. While they are off, spray with fabric or carpet cleaner and shop van them with the bristle brush attachment.

These will look like new when done. Good luck and yes, they sound great.
