is it possible to bypass the amplifier part of the above receiver and use as a preamp only? if so, how would I do so? thanks.

look on the back. If it has a set of pre outs and amp rca's with a jumper, then yes you can just remove the jumper and connect it to a seperate amp... IF NO preouts, then NO.

That model is too low on the Kenwood hierarchy from that time. It does NOT have pre-outs, so you can't use it that way. Not sure which model pre-outs started with, sorry!

Why did you know this?!? ;-) I mean, I know that the KR-3200 was at or near the entry level and probably from the early 1970s.. but I don't have one (?!) and I didn't know a priori that it didn't have pre-out/main-in! :-P

I did have a KR-4200 for a while... nice hefty little receiver (Trio/Kenwood didn't tend to build junk... 'specially the tuner sections, as Trio was first and foremost a radio company) but it had a dead channel and my ability to troubleshoot solid state stuff is extremely limited...

I actually did find some pictures of the rear of the KR-3200, and it does not show the standard preout/ amp in connectors.

I have a Kenwood KR-5400 sitting under my Realistic STA-90, it's been there for a while (I also picked up a Vector Research VR-5000 (downstairs on some EPI 120Cs) around the same time--some guy in Jersey thought they (all three receivers) weren't worth "much" because they were NOT HIGH POWER receivers only 35-45 watts x 2. So I said "sure I'll take the Realistic and the Kenwood and he threw the VR-5000 for nothing? This was a few years ago. I got home and started doing some research on this series of Kenwood and the previous--I guess that just stuck in my memory--believe me, there are tons of things I've forgotten (lady memory is quite "fickle" these days!).

I've always had a soft spot for Kenwood equipment (my friend and I spent many hours in the 80s listening to his Kenwood Integrated (1978) and Technics Direct Drive TT through some EPI T/E 360s (rather impressive '80s EPI towers--a last gasp of quality sound, three ways: airspring Tweet, and a clear plastic coated mid and 10" woofer with a 12" PR. Very FLAT BROAD CABS like a B.A. A 200 or A400. But boy could they SING on that Kenwood integrated! Memories!

I have to agree. They were very impressive. He still has them. Unfortunately he let his brother replace the woofers with some car subs? I've been telling him for years he should contact humanspeakers.com
get a couple of new drivers or rebuilds and renew the cross overs. You don't see many of these around!

Kenwood stuff was generally quite decent and in some cases very good. They were, as I intimated above, first and foremost a radio company; their FM tuners tended to be exceptional.

By and large (and FWIW) I'd consider their 1960s - 1980s equipment superior to most of the other Japanese massmarket brands.

I don't think I have any Kenwood equipment at the moment. I had a dump-find KA-7100 integrated amp (ca. 1977) which my son used for quite a few years and more recently a dump-find, early SS TK-80 receiver (ca. 1967-68). Well built, excellent tuner section. I scrounged up a replacement for the missing knob and recently gave this one away, too...

... oh, and as long as I am wasting time (mine and yours) and bandwidth :-) here's the KR-4200 (one model up from the 3200, ca. 1973):
