Sony XA-5400ES SACD player

I have two of these players, and have decided to sell one. Generally, I am a hoarder, and do not sell stereo gear, but I am running out of room. I just redid my HT rack, and decided the two-channel system is the only disk player I need, so this guy is up for sale.

You can do the appropriate Google search for reviews, but this has been called the best Sony SACD player yet. Most likely, it is also the last. List price is $1499.00, and they are still for sale.

Please notice from the images that the player only supports analog two channel output. For SACD surround sound you need to use the HDMI output into a pre that accepts SACD over HDMI. I have never tried this since I only used it in two channel mode.

As a point of reference, I felt the DAC in this unit is equal to the $2K Bryston BDA1 DAC. I have that DAC, and did a lot of A/B comparisons. However, a weakness of this player is that it does not have a digital input, so you cannot use its DAC for another source.

In perfect shape except for some scratches on the bottom where it rested on Mapleshade Micropoint brass footers. There is one issue that seems endemic to the transport used in these players. Some CDs 'click' while spinning/playing. This is noticeable between tracks if you are close enough to the player.

If inclined, Modwright mods these players to an even higher level.

I don't have the box, but do have the remote and manual. I will include a Shunyata Venom power cable ($100) instead of the stock cord.

Price is $700, which includes shipping and insurance.

One thing I just remembered because I just did it with the other player is that pressing the '>' play key on the Sony remote turns the display on, and at max brightness, on a Pass XP-20 preamp. It might also occur on other Pass preamps if they use the same code. It is annoying, but I don't use the player much anymore.

No bites on this? Suppose to be a nice player and it's priced right.

I am happy with it. Even at list price, it is a great sounding SACD/CD player. As an incentive, I will include new batteries with the remote.

When I first got it and was searching the web for information, I found one technical review where the author was saying that the CD digital was converted to DSD so that the DSD circuitry could be used on Redbook CDs. This might be one reason why even CDs sound pretty good with this player.

Not yet. I am not crazy about selling my 'babies'. I am happy keeping it as a spare, or for a new stereo when I get a new house.

One point I should add here, since I just remembered it, is that it takes a while to burn-in, or the analog ICs really matter. At first I was using Kimber Kable Hero XLR ICs, but a year later I went to MIT Shotgun S1.3 XLRs, and then the sound really took off. Kind of a WTF moment.

Blue Fox do you know if the older Sony remotes will also work with this CD player.

Also can you tell me about the clicking noise.

I am only going to use this with analogue connections.

    Thanks

No idea about the remotes. Some CDs while spinning make a 'click' that you can hear between tracks if next to the player. It is like they aren't balanced or something.

I received this unit from BlueFox a little while ago, very well packed. I have been gone twice since it arrived and have only had a chance recently to get to know this baby. This is an excellent SACD player, well built and elegant. As I'd heard, it excels at redbook CD playback. High level of detail, spacious sound, acoustic instruments particularly are clear, smooth and extended. Dealing with BlueFox on this transaction was a joy and he was impeccable in every respect. I thank you for a wonderful player and your gracious manner of business.
