A lonely hobby...

Well, I was sitting here thinking about how isolated this hobby can be, especially in regards to SDA's. The more I educate my kids (one in particular) about good sound the more they just want to sit in the sweet spot. They're like me, if they can't sit where it sounds best then they won't bother. I can educate as many people as I can and while it's all well and good, let's face it, only one can sit at a time and "really" enjoy the music. It is fun discussing audio with my family and friends and proving points about it however.

Maybe I'm just a little bummed. The wife and kids are gone at my family's for the holidays and I'm still stuck at home with my "employment" (on call 24-7, 365). I haven't drank since 1993, maybe I should go to the store, get a bottle of rye and a shot glass and welcome in the new year to myself...

20 years, that's commitment my friend. Don't jump off the wagon just because your a little bummed. NYE can suck and being alone can suck, but just think of it this way. No one around...no one to steal your sweet spot

Thanks for the encouragement gents. If I was on call as an EMT (what I used to do with a volunteer FD) or something of that nature it would be better. But, now I'm a locomotive engineer on an extra board (get called when they need someone, 2 hour notice) and never know when to sleep or for how long since I never know when I'm going to work. I've been up for over 30 hours many times since I stayed up all day and got called right when I was going to bed (we have a regular 12 hour workday). Don't get me wrong I'm glad to have employment but, man, it gets old..., quick...

Try to remember not the first few drinks, when it was tasting good, feeling good, makin ya all happy.

Try to remember those tips of the glass that were way past good or happy, but you could not stop anyway.

The end of those episodes were not fun or fulfilling, try to remember the whole scenario.

Stay strong, it will pass brother.

It will be all good man. Dont stress the drinking.

Grab some music, grab the sweet spot and TURN IT UP TO ELEVEN!!!

I know what you mean though, just avoid focusing on the sad and bad and instead focus on the good like you should

I look at NYE as just another night. Your family will be home sooner than you think. I try to enjoy my alone time and listen to stuff I forgot I had. Oh and don't forget your favorite Ice Cream. Happy Listening!

I was an operator, and then a dispatcher, and on call 24-7 my entire time with the RR. Never had enough seniority to hold a position. That's tough, used to hang out at the gym playing basketball. Or at home listening to music. Sweet spot.

From another that actually understands. Isn't it kind of neat when you tell family actually what kind of work schedule you have and they look at you and say "What? Are you serious? You are kidding right?".

I know it's not all bad for everyone who works for the RR. In fact, one of the guys I work with (sometimes) is a big time foamer. I kind of envy him, he's living the dream...

No, I didn't fall off the wagon. Got into the tunes. Besides, my wife would kill me if drinking didn't...

Small world, was surprised to see a guy who worked the extra board for the RR on this forum. Its rough sometimes for sure. I was young when I did it so it wasn't as bad, but I travelled all over as an extra operator, got to see some neat places that were abandoned later. The RR builds character like nothing else, that's one good thing. And then there's that sweet spot. I had a good friend who was an extra brakeman and I also hung out at his place a lot listening to music waiting for the phone to ring. Happy New Year!

I hear ya. I started this job at 41 after getting booted (permanent layoff) from my other employment after 16 years. Quite the change to say the least. I told my wife this job would be great for a single guy. It's a little tougher for one who's married with children..., and had to relocate after being in the same area for around 20 years. Happy New Year!(?)

I too sometimes think this is a lonely hobby. Very few people really appreciate a good stereo set up. I have a couple of freinds who wil stop by and "listen to music" sometimes. Mostly though people dont want to sit around for very long.
However, on this NYE I streamed the Phish show on my 52" TV and stereo set up (Conrad Johnson tube pre PV2, MF2200 amp and mySDA CRS speakers). I had about 10 people in my basement and it was awesome. My one freind remarked I dont ever want to go to a Phish concert again, I want to come over here and watch in your basement! Made my night!!
So hang in there buddy!! Happy New Years!!
