Dear Friends Hello

I am building a system with the above mentioned spekers, 2x RTI A9, CSI A6 center and 2x FXI A6 as rear and the PSW125 sub
I was looking for a good quality receiver in the 1000$ range and decided on the Onkyo NR828
However I don't have a chance to listen to any of the above in person as local stores don't carry any of these let alone such a combination. I therefore need to buy everything online.

I would like some input from the experienced forum members to tell me whether such a combination is a good one or if this is a very bad choice what could be a better alternative.

additionally, do you think I need the sub or are the RTI A9 enough

I appreciate your time and input looking forward to hearing from you

Thanks

A.

I have an 808 very happy with it.
I would try it without a sub you can always get that later
and if and then I would get a better sub.

    I have a similar system put together two weeks ago;

    Onkyo 828
    RTiA9
    LSIM 704c center
    Klipsch Synergy 12" sub

I bi-amped mine, RTiA9 does not need sub except floor shaking lows, even it can respond these lows with some subtlety.

I do not understand why general consensus is RTIA9 needs separate amp, Onkyo 828 has no problem driving A9's up to unbearable sound levels undistorted and clear (I did this for short time to test what the system can handle, feared to go beyond 0 db).

I am very happy with this combination, but this is my first system.

I do not have rears/surrounds yet.

I also have a similar setup except for the AVR. The 9's will sound way better if you get an external amp tp drive them, they will sound ok with what you describe but for them to com alive get an amp. I powered my 9's with an Onkyo receiver prior to getting my Onkyo pre-pro and the difference was night and day.

definitely get an external amp, I would even recommend getting last years model of the onkyo, the 818 to get better room calibration.

Bi-amping from an AVR does, well, absolutely nothing in terms of performance gains. Try your A9's with at least 250w or more and you will finally understand.

This is very similar to an original thread you posted which I noticed you never replied to any of the answers given there.

IF you're just looking for an AVR only and IF you're looking at Onkyo, step it up another $300 and get the 929, more power, better EQ and has 11.4 pre-outs.

Your room size will depend on how much you actually need a sub. My temporary room is only 13.5 X 15 and I'm getting plenty of bass from my A9's but I do miss my subs. My previous room was 15.5 X 26.5 and the pair of Empires filled the room nicely. The A9's are pretty bassy but not theater bassy.

Otherwise, get a lesser AVR with pre-outs and do your self a favor and get an amp with at least 250wpc or more.

The reason the "general consensus" agrees is because it's been tried and true.

I look forward to your next thread asking basically the same question with a different twist.

First off, you can't bi-amp squat with an AVR, period.

Additionally, Onkyo likes to play with the specs. They rate it at 160 wpc @ 6 ohms. This is the actual test results at what your speakers are, 8 ohms.

2 Channels Continuously Driven, 8 ohm loads 147 watts
5 Channels Continuously Driven, 8 ohm loads 109.9 watts
7 Channels Continuously Driven, 8 ohm loads 78.5 watts

As you can see, the more channels you use, the less wpc it can provide. You are far better off not ghetto bi-amping and instead replacing the stock jumpers with high quality speaker cable. With the RTiA9's you'd be even better off getting a power amp.

Edit: just noticed your center channel is a complete mis-match. You should have gotten the CSiA6.
