DSWpro660wi subwoofer questions

As I have posted in other threads over the past 3-4 months or so I've been slowly building up a new home theater system piece by piece. I've had the DSWpro660wi subwoofer for a few months and it seemed to work right with my old crappy samsung avr (though it was hooked up through the left/right front speaker channels) but since then I've upgraded to a Pioneer Elite Sc-63 and ditched the samsung.

I purchased a subwoofer cable and plugged it into the zone 1 sub out on the avr, made sure the LFE switch on the sub is switched to YES and plugged the subwoofer cable into that LFE input slot.

Now here is my issue, I don't know if the subwoofer is really doing anything if at all, because to get it where i think I can maybe hear it I have to turn it up to like 35. I'll have to check the manual again but i think that is almost as loud as it is supposed to go. It seems to me like i should be getting a lot more sound out of it.

Also with it being turned up so loud when it wakes up from being asleep it makes that thud when it wakes up which scares the crap out of you if you aren't expecting it.

I know there is nothing wrong with the subwoofer, I must be missing something in my wiring/config.

What receiver?

Most receiver have settings for the speakers. Trying setting speakers to small and crossover 60-80 this will push the lower frequencies to the sub via LFE

I'm running both the DSWPro660 and 550 with the Pioneer SC-61. Turn your sub to about half (20 or so ), hook up your mic and run the MCACC on your Pioneer. Once done, tune the sub to your liking, mine runs at around 30, depending on what I'm listening to. There's also a sub "plus" on the Pioneer (I find it too boomy, YMMV) if you're still not happy. I believe that's the caps on your 660 causing the "pop" you hear, mine does the same (though the 550 does not). Nothing wrong with it, your options are to increase the volume very slowly when booting up your system, or a more permanent fix is to set the power switch to "on" all the time for the sub and you're golden.

Thanks both of you! I checked and the speakers were set to small but in the options there i was able to tweak the sub a little and that might have done the trick. I watched Terminator 2 today to test it and it seemed to work.

I bought this sc-63 on ebay and it didn't come with a mic so I've had to pretty much manually adjust everything and probably didn't get it all correct. I'll probably order the mic and set things up the right way.

I still need 1 more set of rear speakers but I'm running it as 5.1 until then so I can wait a little longer. (I've thought about fxi 3's in the rear to go along with the fx6's eventually)

MCACC does a lot more than just set the speaker levels, so you definitely need the mic to get the baseline of all the speakers set up properly.

Once you have the mic is will recognize your set up through MCACC. You then can tweek levels manually to your liking. Just remember you want dead silence when running MCACC including fans, HVAC, etc

I'm kind of cheap sometimes and will probably spend the next week looking for the lowest price one i can get heh.

Think you'll find the mic to be a smart purchase. Like TX said, you'll want things very quiet. The mic should be set up EXACTLY where your head would be in your ideal listening position. The mic is made to mount on a camera tripod if you can scare one up. Set it on your chair and adjust the tripod's height so the mic is at ear level. You can run the MCACC again when you add your rears or anytime you make changes to your system or room. If you didn't get the manual with your SC 63, you can d/l it from Pioneers Web Site, it'll have a lot more detail on set up.

But it for $27 from Pioneer. Most AVR mics aren't the greatest quality so I would not buy used. As others have said, you definitely need the MCACC set-up mic to start achieving better sound.

Time is money, by the end of the week you''ll have spent way more than $27.50.

I went ahead and ordered it from Pioneer, it was over $44 after tax and shipping but from what you peeps are telling me its well worth it.
