I have a 2 channel Yahama RX-797 receiver rated at 100 watts per channel. It is currently pushing 2 Monitor 70 and 2 Monitor 60 speakers. I also have a Velodyne 12 inch subwoofer hooked to it. I was thinking about replacing the 4 monitor speakers with a pair of rti 10 or rti a7 speakers. Would my receiver be adequate to push the rti speakers to the point where they would be a significant upgrade to the current setup?

If it's a 2 channel receiver why are you driving 4 speakers?

He's using speaker A+B to drive two sets of speakers.

In answer to your question, no....it won't be sufficient to drive those 4 speakers to their potential.

It is a very large open basement. Picked up the Monitor 60 for a steal, and thought they would add to the overall sound.

I would say no higher than the RTIA 7's....the 9's require a tad more power to make them sing. Matter of fact, since you have a sub, maybe even the RTIA 5's maybe better and more cost efficient.

Running 2 pairs of speakers at the same time in the same room results in a lot of bad sound. Instead of shopping for new speakers get some real hifi gear to replace that receiver and only hook up one pair of speakers.

Guys, I think he wants to drop the 4 speaker configuration and run just a pair, which is what you're all obviously recommending. The RTi10s easily beat the Monitor series IMHO. The RTiA7s are even a tad better. However, I do know some on here really do appreciate a properly amplified pair of Monitor 70s.

Thanks everyone. I should have worded the question differently. I am trying to find out if my Yamaha RX 797 2 channel receiver with 100 watts per channel will have enough power to make a pair of rti 10 or rti a7 sound good. There is no place near me to demo, so I am reaching out to you for opinions.

You are correct Mdaudioguy. Drop the four monitors and add a pair of rti, if my receiver is adequate to push them. Unfortunately, I know of no stores in the Pittsburgh area that carries rti speakers,

I would say your receiver is fine for the 7's but stretching it some for the 9's. Just to more directly answer your question.

My apologies, I totally missed that tidbit.

Yes, your receiver will drive them, but not to their full potential. Since you can't demo a pair, the worst that can happen is you will find you need an amp.

Since you are in Pittsburgh, drop by Vintage HiFi of Pittsburgh and talk to Tom, Anders or one of the other guys. Great bunch of audio freaks that will point you in the right direction. They have all kinds of cool gear at reasonable prices. They will even let you bring the RTi or RTiA speakers in to demo on different gear. Tell Tom that Jesse said you should stop by.

Let me chime in here about the A7 speakers...and others, feel free to shoot me down.

I bought my pair about 6 months ago, nice speakers, I was driving them with a 120wpc Harman Kardon HK 3490 receiver, I can honestly say it wasn't ideal, I posted a review of this and was told....get an amp a couple of times. I still had to run a sub, Now about a month ago my other half god love her, was pushing the said combination to levels too high for the receiver to cope with, the tweeters went snap crackle pop.

Great speakers mind you. But if you plan on retaining your receiver and sub, I'd personally recommend an easier to drive tower like the RTi A5, the sub will fill the bottom out nice and you'd still have power to go to a nice high volume level. That said, I've seen on here that Yamaha and RTi result in a rather "bright" combination. Now not trying to discourage your buying decision, but I'd audition a few other speakers first before settling if you can, makes all the difference in the world.

+1. I went through a similar experience with the A7's as "the Browser" and agree with his recommendations.

and im sitting here happy i got my parasound to pair with my 3490 before getting speakers fopr it.

but anywho, that velodyne is a good sub and I think i would go with these guys on a smaller tower or large bookshelf on stands, the sub will easily handle the low end, which means you can put more into trying to get a better mids and highs.
