4 channel amp + 2 channel amp versus 5 channel amp

I finally convinced my dad to put a good stereo on our boat. He currently has a old Kenwood tape deck with 10 disc CD changer, a Clarion Marine APX400.2 amplifier, 4 Clarion Marine 6 1/2 speakers and two Power Acoustics 6x9 in boxes.

First of all is there any reason why the deck/cd changer should be replaced with something new? He doesn't see any benefit.

Second of all I was thinking of going with 4 new 6 1/2 speakers, scrap all the old ones and add a 12 inch sub in a sealed box. The sub would be running off the Clarion APX400.2 amplifier and we could get a new 4 channel amp for the other 4 speakers. Now system will be exposed to very little water, not your ordinary boat, but will see lots of sunlight. Are there any specific types of speakers we should look at?

Also how would you hook up two amps to one H/U? I'm new to this stuff. I don't know what else to say, what can you guys recommend. Oh, and the stereo doesn't have to be super loud as in spl comp but he want's clean sound that will play at moderate to high levels.

Thanks, if you need more details let me know?

    would a 5 channel be better that a 4 channel and a 2 channel?

It depends on what you are looking for. I really like 5 channles and will probably end up with one. 5 channels usually pack a good punch but arent super powerful. Kicker, Crossfire, PPI and Orion make very good 5 channels that are capable of 2 ohm loads so you can run the subs at either 200 or 400 watts (150 or 300 for Orion & Crossfire). Alpine also makes one but its not very powerful at all. The benefit with going with a 4 channel and a 2 channel is that you can get more power to your speakers if you want it whereas the benefit with a 5X is that its a lot simpler to hook up and tweak.

    Bottom line:
If you want 400+ watts for a sub and 75+ to your speakers then a 5X aint for you. If 50x4 and 200-400x1 is up your alley then Id recommend checking one out. I would say Orion and Kicker would be youre best choices.

here is why a 5 is better for the boat...

1- only one amp to mount and keep dry instead of two.

2- smaller amoutn of space necessary for one amp than two... hence this reinforces point #1

    3- simpler wiring job

4- its a boat ... don't make your life hard, and don't spend too much dinero.
