7.1 or 5.1

I have RTIA9'S and a CSIA6 center. I am looking to run F/XiA6 on the sides and a SVS sub, I am torn on the speakers for the rear because I have doors that swing open to this family room. So really two questions.

1) Do I just run a 5.1 and be done

2) Do I step it up and spend the extra money to run a 7.1 and maybe run RC85i for the back.

I will be looking to run Emotiva amps to drive this. The room is a large family room with high ceilings. I apprecite your input.

If you have room, 7.1. If not, 5.1 is enough.
Only some blu-ray and few other sources have dedicated 7.1 channels otherwise 5.1 is all they have anyways.

My current space is so weird that even 5.1 is hard to properly set due to open doorways and sliding back door so I am limited to 5.1 unless I go in-walls that I don't like.

    Klipsch RB81, KG3.5, B&W DM602.5, Polk.
Subwoofers: Klipsch RW10, Triad ProSub Bronze.

    I have 7.0 with 4 RTIA9, CSIA6 & F/XiA6 on side walls; ~ 19' X 12' X 8' room, with ~ 6' opening behind sweetspot of 6' couch. No longer have any need for the Velodyne FSR-15 sub. I wouldn't go back to 5.1. The 2 front a9s are powered by a Yamaha P7000S (700 WPC) = great for 2-channel listening.

With what you are saying about the open space behind the sweet spot. make sure you use direct fire/directional speakers to make sure the sound does not get lost. As was posted above the back rears don't get much workout in a 7.1 but you want to make sure you get the most out of them. You will most likely have to manually set them up + side (if you have Aud or MCACC) to truly hear them.

I find the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 to be pretty subtle, but noticeable. There are times when I'm running in 5.1, and don't notice the change from 7.1. However, I can tell a slight difference.

Honestly, I think you might as well give it a shot. The main reason I did it is because I came across a pair of rear surrounds dirt cheap and figured what the hell...
