Right now i have a Panasonic 47 PT-47WX53 hd tv, a Yamaha HTR-6540 receiver, an HD cable box, and all polk speakers.. the speakers i know how to hook up and stuff its just the wiring. i dont want to spend alot of money on cables i dont need hooking up the receiver. ive heard i dont hook anything up to the reciever except the audio and thats all. Then ive heard you do hook up everything through it. i will be getting a dvd and cd player very soon too. any help will be greatly appreciated.

NICE TO MEET YOU ALL!

CD Outs (on the cd player) to CD ins on the receiver

DVD outs (on the dvd player) to the dvd ins on the receiver

Tape outs (on the tape player) to the tape ins on the receiver

VCR outs (on the vcr) to vcr ins on the receiver

    the list goes on

Speaker wires, black to black, red to red

    fronts to mains
    surrounds to surrounds
    center to center
LFE channel OUT to input on sub
    - Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

Go ahead and hook everything up to the receiver, then the video output on the reciever goes to the TV.

People will tell you to hook the video straight from your DVD to your TV, and your audio to the receiver. The reason is that when you switch video (or audio for that matter) you actually lose some of the quality due to the video switch circuit in your receiver. But while that may be true, in todays revceivers you would be hard pressed to tell the difference (which might require a VERY high end TV to actually see any difference at all. It is much better in my opinion to just hook everything into the receiver and let it do its job. Besides, the video loss is probably only dectable if your using test equipment.

Thanks alot for your help. But my receiver only has one optical and one digital Coax. So when i have those do i still need rca's? right now i have my Cox HD box plugged right into my tv now. the red, blue, and green, of the box right into the tv, and of course the audio outs into the tv also. what im really messed up about is if i have an optical cable do i even need the digital audio out component or the regular red, white audio out cable? im sorry guys :( im learning slowly.

The best video is component---- red, blue, green
The second best video is---- svideo
    The lowest video is yellow
    The best sound digital coax
The second best sound is optical--toslink
The lowest hook up for sound is analog - red &white
