My Story, re "What would you do"
I was going to buy a pair of RTi70's on Friday. The salesman didn't want to hook them up so I could listen to them compared to my RTi38's. I spent a long time listening to the RTi6's and RTi8's powered by a Onkyo 501 receiver. I used the Onkyo because that is what I currently have and I know how to work it.
I had my trusty Radio Shack SPL meter with me so I could listen to both speakers at the same DB level. I only listened to just the 6's or 8's, no other speakers. Crossover was set to 80, don't know if that matters without a sub.
At 90 DB the 6's started sounding very bright to me and the 8's sounded much better. Below 90 DB it was a toss up. When I switched from the 6's to the 8's I had to turn up the voulme up two numbers (50 to 52). I don't understand that because the 8's have a sensitivity of 90 db and the 6's are 89 db.
So, I told the salesman lets go look at the RTI70's. Well I didn't take them home with me because the top of both speakers had some cabinet damage on one corner. One of them was brand new and the other was a return and had no warrenty papers. I just could not see spending another $300 plus my 38's. I did buy a CSi30 for my rear surround when I get a new receiver.
When I got home I listened to just my front 38's and they sounded way better then the 6"s, even at 97 DB. It may just be my room (it's about 3 times bigger than the room at the store). I think the new RTi line up is too bright sounding.
I still want a pair of 70's!
Well that's my story.
Thanks for all your help,
Bill

The salesman didn't want to hook them up??? WTF, that's his job!!! Find his boss, tell him about this lazy ****, piss poor excuse of a salesman and demand to listen to the 70's. Btw, what store was this, CC?Political Correctness'.........defined

welcome Bill H.
What i would do.. when the time is right. go back to the store and see if someone else there more knowlegable can help you listen to the RTi70's.
Lots of guys on here have them.. or like me. the older version of em.. RT800i. Very similar speaker. There is a reason why so many people in here have them... they sound really good with most receivers.. mids are better with them...than most other speakers.. even ones that Polk makes.
good luck.. and give those 70's a good demoing.

That's right, go back and get those 70's. You must demo them in your own environment. You really can't get a sense of how well they sound until you do, especially if you went to CC. I'm almost certain you'll be highly satisfied with the results. I recently upgraded my fronts to the 70's and moved the 38's to the rear. Makes a tremendous difference. Now I gotta watch my DVD's all over again. Dammit.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

If I return my 38's and take the 70's I would have $533 in them. Whould you pay that much for 1 new 70 with a damaged top corner and 1 returned (used) 70 with no warrenty card and a damaged top corner??????
If you say yes, I could go buy the 70's and A/B them to my 38's and return which ever ones I don't want.
I did find a pair of Cherry 70's, I have not seen them but, the salesman said they looked good. How could I make them black and look like they should?
My setup as of now;
4 RTi 38's
CSi40
CSi30

Bill,
My .02.
Don't buy the damaged (one) set. Nothing wrong with cherry, it'll add a some class to where ever you put it. Black can be so......boring.

That really sucks. If the salesman doesn't want to let you demo the 70's tell him you're taking your business elsewhere.
When you moved to the 8's did you place them on the exact same spots the 6 were on? You lose 3db if a speaker is moved back 1m. I'm sure the height could also make a difference depending where you place the SPL meter.

The 6's may have had less play time on the than the 8's, which could be the source of the brightness. The new line is quite bright out of the box, but mellows out nicely after some break-in.
As far as getting the 70's, I don't believe I would pay that much for them at this point. Several people have posted about very low prices (like $199/ea) at stores in their area for new pairs.
