Has anyone tried putting their sub behind their couch?

Has anyone else tried this:

I have a couch that is in the corner and covers two walls (Sectional couch I think it is called), and decided to pull it out from the wall just enough to fit my PSW-202 behind it and up aganst the wall. The bass that the sub now produces is amazing. You can actually feel the bass in the couch since the sub is touching the couch. Just wondering if anyone else has tried putting their sub behind and touching their couch or anything like that?

One of my friends HT's I set up we did a front and rear sub config.
The one behind the couch you could feel but the sound was very dependent on where you sat. If you slouched down on the couch the bass rolled off the back and down and it would BOOM. If you sat up high and straight it was almost completely gone except for the actual vibrations.

Tried putting one behind the couch, but didn't like it. It didn't sound natural to see an explosion in front of you, but hear the bass of the explosion behind you.

Im still Tweaking the placement of the second sub (PSW-202). I have a 404 up front, so far the 202 sounds better wedged up aganst the wall and the couch. I haven't watched any movies with this setup, just tried a few scenes (Jurasic Park 3). Will try out a few movies this weekend and see how it actually fairs.

Seaward how do you have both subs hooked up? I might want to try my psw 202 along with my Paradigm. Put the 202 in the back right corner and leave the paradigm in the front right corner. what should i do about phase on the 202?

Glemay, I recently tried using my 202 with my Tempest and experimented with placement. I left the Tempest in the corner and moved the 202 all over, stacked, side by side, adjacent corner, next to the couch, adjusted phase etc. I made frequency response graphs and found that it added or subtracted about 1-2 dBs in the area of 45 Hz to 100, just not worth it IMO. Your mileage may vary and every room is different but from my experience the 202 will add little especially if you have a 2200. The new analog SPL meters should be coming here soon FWIW.

I have the phase on both subs at 0. The 202 sounds louder because it is firing down the length of the couch and is (im assuming) redirecting/bouncing off the wall. At least thats what I think

Both subs are hooked up from the sub out jack on the AVR. I used a "Y" to split the jack. So far the sound from both subs is huge (loud and you can feel it if you sit on the couch). If I turn off the 404, the 202 sounds pretty good on its own. I haven't calibrated the system yet but so far I found a place for the 202 which I thought would be useless once I got the 404.

I still have some more tweaking to do with the 202 this weekend to see if that will be its final resting place.

I take it the 2200 you have is a kick **** sub ( A hell of a lot better than the 404) If that is the case you may not notice an impact from the 202, but try it out.


So far the behind the couch/against the wall placement of the 202 has yeilded the best results for placement of the 202. I also tried the stacked, side by side, beside the couch thing and the 202 didn't really do much (you wouldn't miss it in that setup) For some reason I pulled the couch out from the wall and put the 202 there and it made a huge difference. I'll stop rambling on

I tried it, with the sub in contact with the couch, but it wasn't that great. I think the main problem was my couch 'floats' in the middle of the room, not on a wall or corner. The sub ended up sounding better in the corner.

I don't have a choice, seeing as my sub is a 15" Eminence loaded in a 4ft x 3ft x 3ft box, with dual 12ft internal folded horns.

Behind the couch it is, though it doesn't REALLY matter much, because it will radiate my entire 2000sq ft abode with effortless, deep, articulate bass.
