I have a Gdc700 collecting dust. Ok player but not the greatest one I own. Are you needing a multi disc for any reason? Few multis that I know of are 'great' players, but I can understand the want for one for a pool, rec room, that kind of environment.

That said, these are from the early 90s and if I remember right, parts are difficult to come by. Mine plays everything but was very easily skipped by walking around the room, although I didn't really have any isolation on it. Hope this helps. If you want mine, I'd part with it...

There were some QC problems with that model when it came out. But if you have a good one it will run and run and run. Can't say much about the sound, though.

Here's what I find amusing. I have a cheap Sony I bought used for about 8 or 9 bucks CDP-XE400 (1990s?). That I use as a test player with a LOT of my vintage receivers. And let me tell you, it sounds phenomenal with that old A$$ amplification! You'd think it was a $600 plus player (or more). The reason? I suspect it is the "roll off" of the extreme hi frequencies by the VINTAGE equipment which makes a 2-300 dollar player from the '90s sound extremely "warm" and "musical".

For 8 bucks, who can complain! I know I can't. And, it also plays EVERYTHING. Even CDs that my Sony ES Blu-ray hiccups on! Go figure!

cnh, are you using vintage speakers as well? I'm a little surprised by that because I found all the vintage SS receivers (outside of the lowly Marantz 2216) I've tried on modern speakers make you cover your ears.

Yeah, you're right. I never use anything but vintage speakers on the old (mostly 70s) receivers/integrateds. Maybe I should whip a couple of more recent speakers on this stuff and see what that sounds like. I'm not motivated to do that because I tend to keep the gear separate, except for SDAs, that is!

I had that player for a bit and it was OK. I'm sure there are newer/better players out there for the same money.

I've got four of the Adcom 600s. Two in use, two that have no analog output, but the digital section makes fine music once decoded by an outboard D/A. One of my "winter projects" is to figure out what's up with the analog sections of these two.

The 600s use the Phillips 16 bit D/A; as far as I'm concerned it's better than the 700 which uses a 20-bit chipset. One problem with the '600 is that even though they sold for big money at the time, they did not have the best grade of the Phillips chip.

There is no skipping problem with these players when they're in good condition.

I'd buy another four '600s if the price was right, and put 'em in the closet "for later". The value-per-dollar is outstanding.

As usual, I ran out of editing time. The DA in the '600 is the Philips TDA1541A, but I have no idea what filter is used. There's talk on one web site about using 4- or 8-times oversampling filters, with or without noise shaping. The "intended" filter to match the 1541 was the SAA7220P, (in A and B revisions) but other filters were used especially late in the production of 1541 D/As. I don't see an SAA7220 in my units.

    http://www.dutchaudioclassics.nl/Philips-TDA1541/

I've forgotten what D/A and filter chips are in the '700. Folks who've heard both seem to favor the '600. I've never heard a '700.

Far as I can tell, the Adcom '600 was made in Japan, while the '700 was Communist Chinese.

If the thing skips, you need a new laser. An hour and twenty bucks (Chinese aftermarket replacement laser) should get you back to the music. Buy two lasers, they don't last like original Sonys. My white '600 is showing signs of skipping after about three or four years on the aftermarket Chinese laser.

Someday I may play with upgrading the op-amp analog sections. Not anytime soon, though.
