My new pre amp is phase inverting and I have SDA's. Do I need to swap the pos and neg speaker terminals? I can't remember the proper procedure.

Thanks

Yes swap the phase on the speakers. However the audibility of absolute phase is debatable.

Thanks Fred, I was more concerned with the SDA's and making sure they are getting the proper signal to function properly.

Oh missed your running SDA's part.In that case I would'nt reverse them unless you have one of the isolation transformers.

My linestage also reverses phase. Best suggestion is to try it both ways to hear which sounds best. IIRC I reversed mine at the speaker and the imaging/clarity/tone was audibly better. I am running a dreadnought, though I wired them the same before the dreadnought without issue.

This came up the other day prefixed with Running Cary pre by kroc321.

My ModWright pre inverted phase and I couldn't tell a difference reversing speaker cables on my ESL's.

For most people, absolute phase doesn't make a difference. My rogue 66 with just unbalanced connections inverted phase and I flipped the pos and neg and didn't hear a difference, but YMMV.

The big caution is with SDA speakers, that flipping the speaker outputs can damage the speakers and/or the amp.

Yes with common ground. An exception would be if using one of the purpose built isolation transformers and a non common ground amp.Polarity could then be swapped with out issue.
As for preserving absolute polarity I have never found it to be a significant factor.

    It's because you don't use the In-phase transformers. :P

So if your out of phase, just go to the darn store and get some.....

Did you hear the one about the two out of phase sound waves of equal amplitude that walk into a bar at the same time?

I've get her hooked up and am tube rolling and it sounds fantastic as is so I won't be futzing with the speaker polarity.

Good one Rich and Fred

I don't know if anyone ever attempted the OUTPHASE transformer trick though.

I usually look for someone about my size before I rip a loud one in the store. I always hope he may also rip one about the same loudness at the same time to cancel out all the noises so no one would go noticed what just happened.

All this Phase talk makes me a bit uncomfortable now. I hope Mike didn't read this thread. lol
