Looking at Yamaha's website it looks like the 5890 is 140w x 7 @ 1khz, so 20hz - 20khz is likely to be a lot lower than 140. The 5740 is 32 pounds and the 5890 is 34.2 pounds. I'm sure weight isn't a definitive source for if something is likely to be more powerful but being only 2 more pounds, I'm willing to venture you'd not be able to tell much difference power wise.

However the 5890 does have preouts. If you have any plans for putting an amp on the setup, you're going to have to find a different receiver anyway.

AGREE- this was my first Polk HT set up. Got a whole package MINT for 125.00 with a receiver that was dead. Originally I had planned on NEW in spring/summer-but it was a cheap HT & i didnt know r30's or r15's at all. I can dump them & get my money back (keep the csi3) & get better speakers, down the road. I dont want a amp on this set up. I can pick up the 5890 for 100.00 but i think ill pass & upgrade the whole works next year .. Thanks for feedback

ALMOST 9 lbs more. The 5740 is 24.4 & 5890 is 33.1 as far as weight is concerned.
From what i read up on. These speakers were BOTL speakers in the day. Reading up on them i read they were sold for 40.00 EACH new when they were discontinued. They are what they are i guess

I have a pair of these as well, you can see the setup in my signature. They're great for non-critical listening. I use them in my music lesson studio when I'm not teaching and they do just fine. Would never consider them anything to write home about though. I'd spend the extra dough on new speakers first, then upgrade the receiver.

^^^^ does yours seem to have too much bass. Ive got mine set way down & use the subwoofer for the bass. Definitely a HT speaker & ok for lite listening. Im going to try hooking them to something else powering them & see how they perform! Playing around is half the fun of this hobby
