After Further Review... Tunes That Really Grew on You with Time

Here's an example I just came across...

I was just out and about and Steely Dan's "Babylon Sisters" came on.

I really did not like this track when it first came out on Gaucho. While it's still not a favorite, I really grew to appreciate the technical approach of this song, it's arrangement.

Left me wondering how many other tunes I've heard in my life that followed a similar path.

Also struck me as an experience that has some thread potential.

    Same tune, same result. Noticed this within the last year while listening to the Gaucho sacd. Used to skip it and now I might play it twice before moving on.

    The Knack - "Your Number or Your Name." Didn't care for this song when I was younger. I was enthralled with "My Sharona" and a couple of others from that record. Now 'YNoYN' is easily my favorite track from that album.

    Babylon Sisters has some crazy imaging. Cool song, Steely Dan is likely my favorite band of all time.

    "You Light Up My Life" still sucks...

    One that has grown on me is "The Disco Strangler" off of The Long Run...

    I agree The Dan is me and the wife's favorites. The Long Run my least favorite Eagles Album Disco Strangler, the Greeks Don't Want No Freaks, lots of filler on that LP, the only song that grew on me Was Timothy B Schmidts Vocals on I Can't Tell You Why, that is the only song that has grown on Me, the man can sing To bad he left Poco.

    Pretty much all Guided By Voices. Every release has its obvious masterpieces, of course, but I always end up falling in love with tracks that I didn't quite get at first...they become essential.

    Sorry - I still don't really care for Gaucho, and I do still really care for all of its predecessors... but I certainly get your point.

    I've gotta say (and I am not necessarily proud of this) but I do find that I really like this song Royals by Lorde. Shouldn't be my cup of tea... but there's something about it; sort of the same reaction I had to Amy Winehouse's song Rehab.

    Chris Isaak, San Fransisco Days, the whole album is a standout for me. I remember the first time I heard it thinking this is different, I need to listen to this again. It got better with every listen as I got to know the songs and is still a favourite.

    I have an example. Bob Seger. As a teen (1970's) and younger adult, I never really much cared for Seger---but now I really appreciate and enjoy listening to his music.

    Aerosmith's Janie's Got A Gun. I hated that song when I first heard it, it sounded so monotonous that it drove me crazy, and they were always playing it. One day it was on and this time instead of hearing the tune I actually heard the words. Needless to say the song got my attention and from there on I liked it. It encouraged me to listen to more of their songs so that now I have the GH album & Toys in the Attic album.

    Here's a "category" that I hated when I was young, and now enjoy thoroughly: Country. As a STL city boy, I never liked country in my younger days, but now I really enjoy it. Lately, I'm buying almost exclusively Country music as the latest offerings of pop and rock do nothing for me. Does rock even exist anymore?

    Older Floyd for me, I used to think they really began with The Dark Side of The Moon, never liked any of the stuff that predated it. Now I think songs like Echoes are fantastic, and Echoes is one I didn't like for years. And even their album from the early-mid 90's Division Bell I didn't like at first, now I think it's a great listen. Didn't like Wearing The Inside Out for years now I really appreciate it. Like Steve said, we change genres in music and other things like our ideology as we age. I'm really focused on Blues now, wouldn't have given it a listen 20 years ago. Ahhh, the life of a FOG....

    I <3 Isolation Drills very much. I think it's his most emotionally sincere and straightforward work. I know he says it's not his divorce record, but he's wrong. It is.

    Under The Bushes Under The Stars is my favorite. That one is a true grower. Didn't quite get it at first; now it's an object of worship.
