What are the best options for a DVD player with progressive scan for about $400. I hear the pioneer elite 45a is good, but I also hear it suffers from the Chroma Upsampling Error. Could I get some recommendations on this or other players in that range?

Get the Panasonic RP-91...I believe you can pick on up for $299 now (down from $499) and it is an awesome unit. I had it for a couple of years and it played beautifully with no hint of the red chroma bug in the pioneer. Picture was top notch as was the sound. Check bizrate for the cheapest price on this unit...hope this helps....See the Music, Feel the Music, Be the Music...

Brentman,
You can go to Crutchfield.com where not only can you see whats out there but learn about DVD features as well. If you like a particular brand name, just search google for more info on it. It's better to take the time and research exactly what you might want to buy.

Heard anything good or bad about the Samsung dvd HD931 high def player?
-
No. It's an interesting idea though. I would like to see what a 1080i DVD movie looks like on a HDTV (with 1080i native screen TV).
What TV are you using?

hITACHI 65S500

Yes that TV has a DVI input. That Samsung might be a consideration for you.

Keep in minde on the Samsung, that the source is still 480. It just "upconverts", so there is no added detail.
Here is the list I would use for picking out a DVD player:

If it upconverts to a 1080i signal, then why wouldn't the picture improve over a 480p signal? -
That is cool but that list is old. The samsung is not even on that list!

The panasonic 91 is ok, but the deinterlacing performance is poor!

The HD931 only does one thing very very well, Play movies. I own one and just hate everything else about it. The remote sucks.
Why;
The eject button is next to the channel up and just above forword.
Chapter advance/reverse and fastforword/ reverse are combined. There is a 3 second delay in which forword/reverse waits to initialize. during that time you had better not move your weak signiled remote because it will default to chatper advance.
The list goes on, but you get.
I would still buy the Samsung dvd HD931 again bacause no one makes a better DVD player for viewing.
One other point. 1080i is superior to 720p in viewing still images only. 720p provides more movement detail and a general clearer image.
