Two years before I was born. I missed a good chunk of great music as it was happening. I saw them live in 69....I will never forget that show....

Never did get to see them live, but I bought their first album in the fall of '68 before fame overtook them. They were pretty much unheard of, and I wore it out! Jeff Beck's Truth came out around the same time - what combination!
Disbanding, while a great loss, was really all they could do. No one could replace Bonham, and he was such a big part of their sound. The Who IMHO made a mistake continuing after Moon, one of the all time originals, died. As good as Kenny Jones was, he just didn't fit."Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer -
Yup, I remember it well. I was in home economics class in 7th grade when I heard the news.
I was too young to have seen them live, but I've seen Page/Plant several times together (one time in the 7th row) and I've seen Robert solo as well. If they ever do the tour that everyone hopes for, I will empty the retirement account if that's what it takes to get tickets. In 1980, they had no choice but to disband. They could not continue on without John Bonham. But in 2013, Jason Bonham has got the goods, so let it happen!!!
As for The Who, I hated the Kenny Jones era. But if you've ever seen them play with Ringo's son, now that's some drumming. Zak Starkey grew up calling Keith Moon "Uncle Keith" and Keith Moon taught Zak how to play the drums, not his father.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance. -
I can vouch for The Who with Zak Starkey on drums. I saw them at the Shoreline Ampitheatre when they had the three original members and Zak on drums. I must confess that for whatever reason I was not prepared for such a great show! There was no other word to describe Zak but outstanding in every way, and Pete Townsend put on a performance that was simply amazing. One of my all-time regrets was turning down a ticket to see Zep in Mpls in '75 with a bunch of my friends.

Yep. Not to hijack a Zep thread and make it into a Who thread, but if you've never seen the Who with Zak Starkey on drums, you wouldn't believe your ears. Close your eyes, you will think you're listening to Keith Moon playing. Seriously.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

I agree that Zak is good, totally different style from his dad. But, not in the same league as Moonie, who always did the unexpected. Never heard anyone since who had such an almost jazz like approach to rock. Of course this totally would not have worked without Pete and John playing the amazing stuff they played.
Funny thing is, Keith's favorite group, and one he lobbied to play with, was the Beach Boys! Can you imagine what that would have sounded like "Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer -
Ok, let's not completely thread jack here, this discussion deserves it's own thread.
On a similar note, though - Jason Bonham. Discuss....Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.
