I guess it all comes down to what one classifies as hi-end? Based solely on price it falls short of "hi-end" but feature wise & sound quality I would say it squarely fits the bill. Yamaha knows a thing or two about producing great sounding & reliable gear.

Phil is right. There is NO end to debating what is high end. And most in that market would NEVER give that status to ANY AVR regardless of cost. AVRs are rarely seen as Hi-End with regards to their Pre-amps. But a lot of that is debatable.

The Yamaha is certainly "good enough" to pair with some nice mid-fi power amps. You'll be happy!

I see you have a Yamaha. do u use the presense speakers in a 11.2 setup? I noticed they have 5 speakers in the front and 6 in the rear. do they all work simultaneously.

What kind of placement do you get with that? I'm thinking for the rear, you get two surrounds and two rear or back surrounds. Then up front, you'd have your Left/Center/Right, a pair of wide channel and a pair of height speakers, so ultimately you'd have 7 front speakers and 4 rear.

that's how I'm set up. Yamaha recommends a different set up with the cx-a5000 pre. I think in the HD3 surround mode. it's bugging me too? it's new. $2500. thanx looking for any feed back.

I like the yamaha cx-a5000. I plan to purchase the cx-a5000 along with the matching mx-a 5000.

The marantz 8801 imo is a very good choice for a pre-amp. As far as receivers go, the marantz 7008 &7007 are would work fine too. Truth be told, it's a toss-up for me between the cx-a 5000 & the 8801.

I have the luxury of great placement because my room is 33' deep. The front has L/C/R & Front presence. Then comes the side surrounds, behind them the rear surrounds, then behind them the rear presence. Firing on all cylinders movie watching is incredible. Yamaha has been doing DSP longer than anyone & they nailed it with their presence speakers. I'm eyeing their new pre myself. Down the road a bit but it's on my radar.

the marantz 8801 was the state of the art at the time. now i think it's overpriced due to the newer models coming out. i wanted the 8801, but not any more.

as for the yamaha set up. i built an 11' entertainment stand. i have 5 speakers on it. l,r,c, wide l, wide r. i would have to put the wides on stands which i have, to fit the yamaha set up of front presense speakers. it could be done, or go with the pioneer elite, i would have a choice of front wide or front height speakers. i think the wides would have a greater impact.
