Wow what a great thread, lots of good advice and no bs belt vs direct vs 1200 is better than anything bla bla bla. I just went from a stock 1200mk2 to a scout 1.1 and I love this table! Can't wait for some break in and than on to final tweaking. I'm running a clear audio maestro wood and this thing is extracting stuff from the vinyl I never knew was there, even music I'm very familer with on albums I've owned for thirty years...Two Channel-SDA SRS 1.2tl's,modded, Cambridge Audio 851w amps(2),Cambridge 851e pre, VPI Scout 1.1 tt, Moon audio phono pre, oppo bd105.

A question to you guys. I'm really interested in a scout turntable, currently running parasound p5 and a23 with a bugle 2 and sda 1c's. Would a scout 1.1 be lipstick on a pig or show some decent improvements in sq from an older dual 505-2?McCormack DNA-1 Amp, Parasound Halo P5 Pre Amp, Denon DVD 2900 CD player, Adcom GDA 700 DAC, VPI Traveler TT with Denon 103R cartridge, Lounge Audio MKiii phono pre and Copla SUT, Polk SDA SRS 3.1 TL speakers, Tributaries series 8 IC's and speaker cable.

I just recently moved from a Marantz TT-15s1 turntable. I was using originally with a P5 and then switched to a zPhone pre when I switched pre-amps. Within the last 6 months I also changed turntables to the VPI Prime and the zPhono to the Parasound Halo JC-3. The change was rather dramatic. The VPI table is a great piece of equipment and support has been great.
Good luck with your adventure. Congrats on your new VTI!If you were to make a more even comparison between belt drive and direct drive, I would compare the VPI against a Technics SP 10......
+1 to this. Why, the SP10 had the electronics moved to a separate enclosure. Stick them in a nice heavy wood plinth with a significant arm upgrade, very hard to beat.
If you ever decide to go with a speed controller, I suggest you skip the VTI and go with the Phoenix Engineering Falcon Digital Power Supply Unit. He also offers a RoadRunner Tach that interfaces with the controller. Stick the supplied magnet on bottom of platter, fasten the pickup and plug it in to the controller. Best of both worlds, quiet and dead on accurate needle in the groove speed control.
I am affiliated with Phoenix as a Beta tester for his beta 25 watt Falcon Digital speed controller for use on the Lenco idler drive (~19 watt motor). Despite the affiliation, it is still an excellent product.

The Falcon is amazing and is a very real upgrade for any low to mid range VPI table. I would highly recommend the Falcon for any Scout, Scout JR, HW-19, Nomad, original traveler (without power supply). etc., you will really hear the difference. Nice job!

I'd say your system would definitely benefit from the upgrade. The Bugle 2 is probably your weakest link, but not so much so that you wouldn't hear significant improvements. And frankly you'd probably have to lay down some serious cash on a phono-pre upgrade to hear a night, and day difference over the Bugle. In short...Go for it!HT
