'Tis The Season

I have a friend of the family, a gentleman in his late 60s I believe, who is midway through a divorce. I dont like to judge, its none of my business. But I didnt know her all that well, and he has been a wonderful influence on me, especially musically. So, I really feel for him. He absolutely LOVES music, especially anything to do with jazz/blues. Ive introduced him to people like Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart and the guitar playing of Lindsey Buckingham. Hes shown me how good B.B. King and Etta James can be, while at the same time helping me to grow my appreciation for different music genres. Last week we were able to take in The Tedeschi Trucks Band locally and it just lit up his life I must say.
He has been boarding with a friend of his, and recently was able to get a small bachelors apartment in town. His financial resources are very minimal, most going towards the necessities of life. I had a thought of bringing some music into his new home, knowing he has a small cd collection and nothing to play them on. So I started a quest on setting up a little system for his new place, sort of a home warming/Christmas thing.
In a couple of days I managed to pick up a new open box Sherwood RX4105 receiver (100 x 2) for $70, and a pair of Polk M20 speakers, new, $128 for the pair from an authorized dealer in town (nice price I thought, thanks Polk). As most of you know, these are small floor standers. I had thought of a couple of bookies but in all honesty I would have had to get stands because I doubt hed have anything to set them on. For delivery, I had a Sony 5 disc cd player gathering dust in my basement that I threw in. Got everything together last night, I had some decent speaker wire and a serviceable set of RCAs in my giant electronic cable bin ( I know most of you have at least one of these!). And damn if this little thing didnt sound pretty good. Hoping to drop things off this weekend if hes around. Oh, and picked up Trucks new cd Made Up Mind to throw in, gotta have something new to play on it, right?
This was absolutely my pleasure to do, the reward is so much greater than the $200 investment. I hope you folks will have the chance to give the gift of music to someone you care about this season, because as everyone on here knows, music is what makes the world go round.
Bill.
