Older PSW250 Sub - Sounds like its overpowered?

I have an older PSW250 powered sub. The speaker works just fine, I even brought it into a speaker shop to be tested, but the sub sounds like it is overpowered. At low volumes the sub sounds nice and warm, the problem happens when loud explosions or in loud parts in music. The only way to describe this as it sounds as if there is a "bass-boost" or the driver is firing twice?

Pardon my ridiculous description but instead of loud booms or explosions sounding like "BOOooooooooooomm" my PSW250 sounds like "BoomBooooooommmm"

Could the amp be bad on the PSW250 and is it worth getting fixed, or just getting a new sub?
