intermittent "tinny" sound
I have a new problem that just arose yesterday. After a few minutes of listening to output from my satellite receiver/DVR through my AVR , I noticed the sound was becoming "tinny". It almost sounds like feedback that you would get from a microphone, but not that loud. I unhooked all other inputs to the AVR except for the optical input from the DVR and I unhooked the output to the sub. I still got the tinny sound. I have not noticed this problem when listening to the tuner.
What puzzles me about this is that it doesn't make the tinny sound right away, it takes a few minutes. Sometimes more. It does this in direct, stereo or surround mode but if I change from stereo to surround mode it will go away but will come back in a few minutes.
Do you think I have a problem with my AVR or could there be an issue with my DVR (grounding?) that could cause this?
Thanks,
Sparky

You could try something like a Monster power strip with a "power cleaner". Otherwise, you need to unhook everything, plug in just the receiver with two speakers at some other location in your house and listen to the tuner for awhile and see if you get the same problem. Then add components one at a time, to try to isolate the problem.

PolkThug,
Thanks for the advice. I started doing just what you said last night and haven't had much luck. I haven't disconnected all the other speakers yet, will try it tonight. Coincidentally, I've been looking at the Monster PowerCenters too. Looks like that would be a good investment.
I think I will pack up the receiver and take it to a buddy's house to see if the problem persists with other equipment attached. The sound is just horrible. The bass is very muddy, the highs are tinny and overall lacking in volume.
I hate to think my receiver is dying on me. It still seems to work fine in 5.1 but not in other modes. Is it possible there is a problem with the processor. I reset the processor and that didn't seem to make any difference. I hope it's just a ground issue.
Anyone else out there have any ideas?
Thanks,

More info... the problems I am experiencing are NOT just with the satellite receiver input. It doesn't seem to matter what the input is, including the tuner, it all sounds bad except in 5.1.

Possibly the amp in the receiver is crapping out. Does the receiver get really hot?

The receiver gets warm but I wouldn't say that it gets hot.Mains: Polk RTi150 (bi-amped 200 x 2)

One reviewer had this to say:
""PROTECTION"- circuit doesn't work fast enough for the current it gives, I've burnt out a couple of units way too easy. Better doulbe, triple check all spker wires, vol level before using.."
Possibly it "burnt out". You'll know for sure after you hook it up at your buddy's house.
