Took the plunge.......

So I finally bought a new home theater setup (everything except receiver that'll come later). Newegg was having a heck of a sale on Polk gear so I picked some up:
2 -Monitor 70 series II fronts
4 - Monitor 40 series II rears/surrounds
1 - PSW505 sub
1 - CS2 Series II center

First of all what does everyone think of my selection? Second on the Monitor 40's does it matter if they are mounted horizontal or vertical? Also has anyone found a solution for mounting them to the ceiling?

Welcome to Club Polk and congrats on your new speakers. Now when you go to get a receiver, make sure you get one with all the bells and whistles you want it to have but most importantly make sure it has preouts so that you have separate amplification options further down the line.

Most receivers are not able to power speakers to their full potential, which is why most of us have amps powering our speakers. But the first step is to get a receiver that an amp can be added to it. It will cost more money up front, but it is an upgrade that you can use for years no matter what other upgrades you do.

Thanks for the reply right now I'll be running them off my old receiver but when I get a new one I'll keep in mind you suggestions. I wasn't in the market for speakers but newegg had some prices I couldn't resist and these will be great in my wife and I's new house.

Please reply back with how you're liking your new speakers. Your option is one of a few that I'm seriously considering, especially after hearing from others how much they love the 70's.

I run a similar system myself, mostly because I'm a cheap dude and you can't beat this system in its price range. But I must add that M-70s rarely sound their best unless they have a lot of power (mostly for two channel, that is). And the least amount of power that I would recommend is what my Onkyo puts out (which is over 130 watts x 2). Even with the Onkyo, slapping a power amp onto the front channels will give you more ooomph!

Don't skimp on your "power". You got a good deal on a value surround system but you need good clean power to make it "sing"!

I'll let everyone know but I can't hook them up for a few months since our new house won't be built till then and my receiver is in storage

I plan to get a good receiver I know I don't have near the power for these right now (80 watt per channel) but I will hold m judgment on them till the new receiver and possibly amp (I'll have a thread when I start looking)

It sounds like all of the Polks like power. What's a recommend 5.1 or maybe a 7.2 receiver that would be good for these speakers? Say maybe under $1000 and closer to $700 if possible?

No, not all Polks are power hungry. Whats being stated is that any speaker will benefit from good power, regardless of brand. Receivers are a matter of personal taste too. Doesn't matter 5.1 or 7.2, all depends on your budget and the room you want to put it all in. Keep in mind, the more speakers added on to a receiver the less power all channels get. This is why when looking for a receiver, make sure it has pre-outs which will enable you to add a power amp down the line should you ever need to.
